Well look what we have here... HTC Shift on Sprint's 3G Network

It looks like HTC's first UMPC the Shift will be making its North American debut on everyone's favorite (cheapest network) Sprint. Expect to pay $15000.00 to get your hands on a device running Windows Vista and Windows Mobile all in one device. This device might not be for everyone, but for everyone that wants a 3G device and a cell carrier with the best coverage around this might peak your interest. Props to Sprint for taking the chance on this!!!!!

Can you imagine Verizon even contemplating this? (highly doubt it) so head on over to Sprint for all the details.

Up next for Apple: the return of the Newton

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple will be bringing back the Newton, sort of.

"Apple Inc, which helped spawn the PDA market with its Newton MessagePad line in the early '90s, plans to give the concept another go with a modern day reincarnation of the old fan favorite based on the company's new mutli-touch technology, AppleInsider has learned.

With the initial iPhone now out the door and two successive models well underway in Apple's labs, it's believed to be full steam ahead for the modern day Newton project. Like iPhone and the iPod touch, the new device runs an embedded version of Apple's Mac OS X Leopard operating system.

Externally, the mutil-touch PDA has been described by sources as an ultra-thin "slate" akin to the iPhone, about 1.5 times the size and sporting an approximate 720x480 high-resolution display that comprises almost the entire surface of the unit. The device is further believed to leverage multi-touch concepts which have yet to gain widespread adoption in Apple's existing multi-touch products -- the iPhone and iPod touch -- like drag-and-drop and copy-and-paste."

The above picture is an artist rendering. If true this would be Apple's response to the UMPC. Stay tuned.

  Samsung Q1 Ultra Gallery

Gizmodo has spent some time with the new Samsung Q1 Ultra UMPC and created a gallery of great pictures.

"Having spent some time with the Q1 Ultra, I feel it's my duty to tell you that the most appealing version isn't $799, but $1,199.

Yes, all Q1 Ultras are thinner than the original Q1 with a brighter (300 nit), higher-res (1024x600) but still 7" screen. They all weigh 1.5 lbs., have the split QWERTY keyboard, the 1GB of DDR2 RAM, 802.11b/g plus Bluetooth 2.0, stereo speakers and a dual-array microphone. Battery life is up to 4.5 hours (as opposed to the previous Q1's 3.5 hours). With an extended battery, you can get up to 8.5 hours, and a full 13 hours if you use a "dual battery" configuration.

But the $1,199 Q1U-V, which will ship soonest, in just a couple of weeks, also has two cameras, a VGA up front for video conferencing and a 1.3-megapixel one in the rear for still shooting. It's got an 800MHz Intel Ultra Mobile A110 processor, instead of the $799 version's 600MHz. It has a 60GB 1.8" drive hard drive and a memory card reader (just SD and MMC, but still useful)."

  Samsung's Q1 Ultra released, starts at $799

"Samsung's getting all cutesy on us by launching the new Q1 Ultra exactly a year after the Q1 first arrived on shelves May 7, 2006. Luckily for us, May 7, 2007 is looking to be a bit more exciting for the UMPC lovers among us, since Samsung has boosted the battery life to a "minimum" 4.5 hours, added an LED backlit 1024 x 600 screen and stuck plenty of wireless connectivity into the new unit. The split-QWERTY keyboard held up well in our initial, informal encounters, but that's the largest departure for the new device, and hopefully it does indeed mark an end to UMPC input woes. But despite all those spec enhancements, the best news is the price: Samsung's starting these out at $799, not cheap enough to start a revolution, but at least edging the UMPC away from its current luxury status."   Could this be what Palm is working on?
The Boy Genius has a video posted of Microsfot CEO Steve Balmer demonstrating the HTC Shift. It's a pretty cool looking UMPC, but it's also a smartphone.

After watching the video I started thinking about the device Jeff Hawkins is expected to announce at the Mossberg and Swisher's D Conference in May. There's been some chatter that Palm is working on an UMPC, and after watching this video I'm starting to think we may see this type of device announced by Jeff Hawkins in May. While the device in the video is larger than a Treo, Steve Balmer explains that you can use your BlueTooth headset to make your phone calls on this full blown Windows Vista UMPC.

With Palm's announcement of their upcoming Linux Operating System, what better device to appear on than a Palm OS Linux UMPC Smartphone? The Linux OS will give Palm the ability to do a helluva lot more than we can do on current devices. What better company to introduce a device like this than Palm? They know their stuff when it comes to mobile computing. They've pioneered it, while Apple failed with the Newton, and soon Microsoft saw Palm's success and wanted in on the game.

I have a Samsung Q1 UMPC running Windows XP and if there was a way to run Palm OS Linux on it, while still giving me full phone capabilities, the Palm OS experience, and the thousands of Palm applications I'd fly to Summyvale and camp out to get my hands on this.

Expect something big in May (not the 755p,even though I already know I'm buying one). Something HUGE especially from the person speaking about the device. Jeff Hawkins, maker of the Palm Pilot, maker of the Treo, and now maker of Device X. He's got a great track record when it comes to mobile computing. Expect something that will be bigger than the Palm Pilot and Treo. Can't wait until May. Stay tuned.

Samsung considers cheaper version of Q1 Ultra

"Samsung Electronics may produce a cheaper version of its new Q1 Ultra ultra-mobile PC in a bid to boost sales, a senior company executive said Thursday.

"In order to have more users who can afford this kind of product, we are thinking of coming up with a second version," said H.S. Kim, executive vice president and general manager of Samsung's computer division, speaking at the launch of the Q1 Ultra at the annual Cebit exhibition in Hanover, Germany.

Samsung won't yet disclose the price of the Q1 Ultra, which will hit store shelves around the world in May. But executives said the device will be priced similarly to its predecessor, the Q1, which retails for around $1,300, depending on the processor and system configuration.

Samsung is counting on the Q1 Ultra to sell two or three times more units than the Q1, which has so far sold less than 100,000 units, Kim said. This is where the possibility of a second version comes in to play: lower costs could make the device appeal to more users, driving up sales.

Kim declined to comment further on the successor to the Q1 Ultra. Given the high-end specifications of the model announced this week, there are several areas where costs could be cut."
