Yup, you read that right. The New York Times' Tech Columnist David Pogue performed "Apps!… I did it again" during his keynote at the Interop New York 2009 keynote today.

Messages From Britney: Britney will be communicating directly with users by dropping exclusive messages.
News: Users will be the first to receive official news.
Fresh Updated Photo Galleries: Users will have access to 100+ photos from Britney's archives as well as her recent "Circus" tour which include fans, dancers, behind the scenes and more. The photo galleries will be updates as new Britney images arrive. The photos can be saved to users' iPhoto library and can be used as wallpaper.
Home Screen: The home screen will frequently be updated and will feature the latest photos of Britney plus photos throughout her career and # 1 selling Circus tour.
Twitter: Users will be able to follow Britney directly and receive her latest tweets.
Sparkler: The Sparkler is the ultimate concert companion. Users will be able to hold up the Sparkler at her concert or keep as a souvenir of the closing finale on her Circus Tour.
Shaking an iPhone/iPod touch will result in an audible "It's Britney bitch" message.
"The source mentioned that this application could also be incorporated into the iPod.app before release," Weintraub reports. "Though it wasn't specified, the app will likely have the same Live Pause functionality that the Nanos currently enjoy."
Weintraub reports, "Apple's iPods and iPhones have been able to receive FM radio signals for some time now [and] this wouldn't be the first time Apple awoke sleeping hardware functionality from its mobile products... For instance, Apple didn't enable Bluetooth in its 2nd generation iPod touch until 9 months after it was released." Via 9to5Mac .

Patrick Jordan from one of my favorite iPhone sites, Just Another iPhone Blog sent me news on a very cool app. It's called "Copy Share". It allows you to share your clipboards between multiple iPhones, iPod touches, and Macs. Copy and paste from one to the other seamlessly.

"Beginning tomorrow, the (iPhone) App will be available," a customer service representative for the New York-based company said on Wednesday.
The iPhone service, which can also be used by iPod Touch Wi-Fi users, will be free for Sirius customers who subscribe to its Internet option. Others will have to pay about $3 month, the representative said.
The move is seen an important way for Sirius to gain and retain subscribers, by providing easier access to its news, talk, music and sports programing through means other than its traditional satellite-based platform."

I received word from my contact at DataViz that Documents To Go for the iPhone and iPod touch has gone live at the Apple App Store! Documents To Go has been my must have application for many years on my old Palm OS devices and now the award winning office suite is coming to the iPhone and iPod touch.
There are two editions of Documents To Go for iPhone and iPod touch: Documents To Go and Documents To Go with Exchange Attachments. Both editions provide the following features:
Customers who chose to purchase Documents To Go with Exchange Attachments will have access to the following features:
Also included in this edition of Documents To Go is the InTact Technology that ensures that your document's original formatting remains the same regardless of where it is worked on. Another cool feature is DataViz's built-in support for cut, copy and paste without the need for iPhone OS 3.0 installed.
I have also been told that Documents To Go is iPhone OS 3.0 compatible so if you buy Documents To Go before you upgrade to iPhone OS 3.0, you can do so worry free.
Documents To Go and Documents To Go with Exchange Attachments are both available now from the App Store and are being sold at a special two week introductory rate of $4.99 and $9.99.
Both versions of Documents To Go require an iPhone or iPod touch with OS 2.2 or later.
I'll have more details about both versions of Documents To Go after the official DataViz press release is issued and I've had a chance to take Documents To Go out for a test drive.
For more details, visit the DataViz website.

An anonymous tipster sent me the above screenshot. Apple will be introducing iPhone/iPod touch note syncing through iTunes when it releases Mac OS X 10.5.7. This feature has been requested when Apple launched the 1st generation iPhone. This will make many people happy, the feature should have been there since day one. Better late than never.

As of today, nearly one billion apps have been downloaded around the globe. So we just want to say thanks — a billion. Download an app and you’ll automatically get the chance to win a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro. Just go to the iTunes Store, browse the App Store, and download your best app yet.
The presentation by Greg Joswiak, Apple's VP of product marketing for iPods and iPhones, also detailed that Apple has shipped 800,000,000 apps from iTunes in the first eight months, which is well ahead of the previous pace to reach a billion apps in its first year. In comparison, it took Apple two years to reach its first billion song downloads." Via AppleInsider .

"Your application duplicates the functionality of the built-in iPhone application Mail without providing sufficient differentiation or added functionality, which will lead to user confusion."
The jailbreaking community has actually grown since Apple began allowing 3rd party applications to run on the iPhone OS. Cydia , the installer app that runs on jailbroken iPhones and iPod touch has announced that beginning today Cydia is opening its own App Store where developers will be able to sell and distribute their applications.
This news will definitely anger Apple, but hopefully it'll show them that developers and customers want to be able to create and purchase applications that add functionality not allowed or available due to Apple's choosing.
Copy/Paste is reason enough to jailbreak ;)

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mar. 4, 2009-- Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) today introduced “Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch,” a new application available for free from Apple's App Store that lets customers enjoy over 240,000 books, including 104 of 112 New York Times Bestsellers, on the iPhone and iPod touch using Apple's Multi-Touch user interface. Amazon's new Whispersync technology saves and synchronizes a customer's bookmark across their original Kindle, Kindle 2, iPhone and iPod touch, so customers always have their reading with them and never lose their place. Kindle customers can read a few pages on their iPhone or iPod touch and pick up right where they left off on their Kindle or Kindle 2.
“We are excited to bring the new Kindle application to Apple's App Store and think customers are going to love how easy and fun it is to read their Kindle books on the iPhone and iPod touch,” said Ian Freed, vice president, Amazon Kindle. “Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch is a great way for customers to catch up on their current book wherever they are, like in line at the grocery store or between meetings.”
The Kindle application for iPhone and iPod touch lets customers bring their Kindle books with them wherever they go and takes full advantage of Apple's Multi-Touch user interface. With the new Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch application, customers can:
* Shop for hundreds of thousands of books on their Kindle or online at http://www.amazon.com/kindlestore, and wirelessly transfer the books to their iPhone or iPod touch
* Access their entire library of previously purchased Kindle books stored on Amazon’s servers
* Adjust the text size of books
* Add bookmarks and view notes and highlights Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch is available for free from Apple’s App Store on iPhone and iPod touch.

In an interview with Bloomberg at the Davos, Switzerland event, Adobe chief Shantanu Narayen describes development as a complicated two-way process rather than maintaining the previous image of a one-sided effort that would depend on App Store approval before it could launch.
"It’s a hard technical challenge, and that’s part of the reason Apple and Adobe are collaborating," he says. "The ball is in our court. The onus is on us to deliver." Via AppleInsider .
Apple doesn't list any new features with this update, only bug fixes and improvements.

Copy and Paste wasn't a high priority for Apple in the iPhone OS, but it's a feature that many people need in a smartphone. Leave it to the developers creating applications for Jailbroken iPhones to come up with a solution. Clippy allows you to copy and paste through out all of the iPhone stock applications (Safari, Mail, Text, etc.) and some applications from the App Store (I used Zenbe above). Clippy can be found on the Cydia app.
The iPhone's custom auto-correct dictionary (located at /private/var/mobile/Library/Keyboard/dynamic-text.dat for all your jailbreaking, SFTP-ing types) doesn't update itself when you're using, say, Notes. Using Mobile Safari's Google search box, however, seems to instantly refresh the file.
At the same time, Notes and other type-friendly apps will pick up whatever additions you make with Mobile Safari." Via lifehacker .
Apple has announced that the App Store has had over 500 MILLION downloads and over 15,000 applications available. Not too shabby for opening up last July ;)

SAN JOSE, Calif., December 17, 2008 – iambic, Inc., a leading provider of innovative productivity-enhancing software, today unveiled its first iPhone App, SnappySeeker, a super efficient way for users to launch Internet searches with just one tap. This app, formerly known as GoogHelper, has an easy-to-use interface that can accommodate searches in 15 different categories. With the addition of the iPhone, SnappySeeker is now available for popular smartphone devices including the BlackBerry, the Palm Centro/Treo, the T-Mobile G1 running Google Android, and cell phones running Windows Mobile.
“As we expanded the availability of this handy app across more platforms and listened to the feedback from our customers, we realized that the name GoogHelper was a bit too narrowly focused,” said Adriano Chiaretta, COO of iambic, Inc. “The new name, SnappySeeker, is actually more reflective of our business philosophy – to focus on creating apps that can be easily tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual, are intuitive to use, and introduce fun ways to get more done.”
Along with reducing the number of taps it takes to find what you are looking for, SnappySeeker is designed to take advantage of Google Maps as well as the mobile device’s SMS/text messaging capabilities, to send searches to the Google SMS service for immediate results.
In particular, the iPhone version features integrated browsing capabilities and a “touch & scroll” navigation bar which enables users to obtain results across multiple search providers (such as Amazon, Flickr, Technorati, Wikipedia, eBay) in seconds.
Availability and Pricing:
The iPhone version of SnappySeeker can be obtained from Apple’s iPhone App Store at the introductory price of $0.99. It appears in the Productivity category.
SnappySeeker is also available on Palm OS, Windows Mobile (Pocket PC and Smartphone Edition), BlackBerry and the Android platforms. It can be downloaded directly from iambic ( www.iambic.com ) or from partner sites, including Handango, Handmark and Mobihand.
"If you made it through the fine print, you may have noticed that there are now 10,000 applications available for iPhone and the iPod Touch available on the App Store. Nothing new there, either," Goldman reports.
"What is new, and absolutely stunning, is the small print at the bottom of today's ad. Apple now says that iPhone users have 'downloaded over 300 million' applications from the App Store, from games to business programs. Why is that stunning? Consider that on the company's conference call on October 22, Apple disclosed that the following day, Apple expected users to download their 200 millionth app. Which means, as of today, users have downloaded a staggering 100 million apps in just the past 6 weeks," Goldman reports.
"So all that talk of a 'bubble' in apps demand was just that, talk! Experts expected an initial big shot in the arm, and that demand would trail off as the weeks passed by. These figures suggest that the app store is only gaining momentum, and it's another big reason for users to choose iPhone over Research in Motion's BlackBerry," Goldman reports.

That was fast! Apple released the iPhone 2.1 firmware yesterday and the iPhone Dev Team has just released the Pwnage Tool and QuickPwn to allow jailbreaking on firmware 2.1. I used it on my iPhone 3G and it was a success.
"The iPod touch was a revelation when it was introduced a year ago: an iPhone without the phone, a wish come true for geeks everywhere who had already signed their lives away to Verizon or Sprint. The improvements that come with the touch 2G are minor—a built-in speaker, a barely-thinner contour, and the useful-if-not-mind-blowing Genius feature. Nevertheless, they're something, and when you improve a five-star product, you get, well, an even-better five-star product. Sorry, folks, that's as high as we go. The greatest improvements are probably yet to come, as more exciting apps are designed to exploit the strengths of the touch platform. But as it stands the iPod touch remains the best portable media player on the market, period," Gideon reports."
“iPhone’s unique capabilities, easy SDK and the ability to reach an audience of millions via the App Store made this an easy development choice for us,” said John Pollard, Jott CEO. “To date, we’ve had hundreds of thousands of downloads of Jott for iPhone, which has been a major win for our company.”
“Because I already had a full-time job I used the iPhone SDK to create Trisim in my spare time and in my wildest dreams I never expected this kind of result,” said Steve Demeter, founder of Demiforce. “Selling over 27,000 downloads in the first three weeks means I now have a significant new income stream and some exciting career choices that I didn’t have a couple of months ago.”
“As an 18 year old iPhone Developer Program member I won an Apple WWDC student scholarship and used the opportunity to complete my app over the summer,” said Bryan Henry, developer of Equivalence. “It was a lot of fun to pull it together and certainly the most lucrative summer job I’ve ever had as I made over $8,000 in my first month of App Store sales.”
“Our new account registrations on the App Store are 300 percent better than all our other registration avenues combined,” said Chris MacAskill, SmugMug’s co-founder. “We’ve been able to do things with our iPhone app that we just couldn’t have dreamed of doing on any other mobile platform, so these are revolutionary times for us and for iPhone and iPod touch users.”
Apple has released the iPod touch 2.1 Software Update. Apple is charging iPod touch owners $9.95, the update is available through iTunes. Apple has announced that the 2.1 Software Update for iPhone owners will be available Friday for FREE.
iLounge has posted pictures of the dimensions of the upcoming iPod nano, and iPod touch.
"Images of the supposed new iPod nano show a device that measures 90.75mm tall by 38.75mm wide by 6.08mm deep, compared to the second-generation nano’s measurements of 90mm by 40mm by 6.5mm. These numbers suggest that the device will be the thinnest and narrowest iPod nano yet released, though almost inperceptibly so, while also just a hint taller than the original and second-generation models."
"The second-generation iPod touch is depicted as having a shape similar to the iPhone 3G, masking increases in both the height and thickness by using a more tapered enclosure. This device is shown as measuring 111mm tall by 61.8mm wide and 8.4mm deep, versus the original iPod touch’s 110mm height, 61.8mm width, and 8mm depth, and the iPhone 3G’s 115.5mm, 62.1mm, and 12.3mm measurements. What appears to be an antenna enclosure is shown on its rear top left, with the same headphone port and Dock Connector port arrangement at its bottom. Notably, the drawings show what appear to be volume controls on the left side, addressing a key concern of iPod touch users; the added thickness might be attributable to changes in the battery. "

Ubergizmo has posted some leaked shots of the Nike+ interface for iPhone & iPod touch. Currently the iPod nano is the only device that works with Nike+. It'll be very cool to have all your user information and graphs on your iPhone or iPod touch, it should keep ya motivated.
***UPDATE*** AppleInsider has confirmed the above pictures are fake. Apple hasn't given developers a program interface to access music on the iPhone. Also notice Coldplay's song "Violent Hill", it's really "Violet Hill".

Apple has released iPhone firmware 2.0.2 for iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPod touch. Apple has only listed "bug fixes" in the description. Stay tuned.
As of Friday, 8 Aug, there were 1,647 applications officially available for the iPhone. Many downloads are free, but the first month saw $30m in paid-for software sales. The store is having a wider impact on download pricing too. When the store opened in early July the popular market price for a program was $9.99. In the month following the prices have dropped so far that many are now 99 cents, and even popular games are now debuting at this price." Via The Register .
This application is awesome! SimplifyMedia is offering the application for free to the first 100,000 downloads, and then will be $3.99 afterwards. I'd recommend getting this app while you can because there's a good chance Apple is going to pull it from the App Store.

In the month since Apple opened an online software clearinghouse called the App Store, users have downloaded more than 60 million programs for the iPhone, Chief Executive Steve Jobs said in an interview at Apple's headquarters. "We’ve just had word that our friends at RiPDev almost have Installer 4 (Beta) ready for public beta release, with that awesome news we’ve decided to include it in the PwnageTool 2.0.2 release, we are waiting for the software from them and we need to quickly test and add a small couple of changes that go alongside Installer.
Usually we don’t give release dates, this is so we don’t feel pressured into releasing something if it isn’t ready, or we can hold off if something comes up in the last minute (last time this was the addition of the 3G jailbreak), today we thought we were releasing, and you guys seemed restless (we read the comments) so we said “sometime today”.
We think the Installer 4 beta is big news, and I’m sure lots of you guys want it and because of this the release should now take place sometime tomorrow (Friday), we want to do all this in one hit, we don’t want to make two releases in two day."
Apple has pulled another application from the App Store without any explanation. Although I wonder how it ever made it on to the App Store when other applications are still waiting for approval by Apple. Apple gave the green light to an application that was being sold for $999.99, it displayed the screen below.
The description of the "I am Rich" application from the App Store is below.
"The red icon on your iPhone or iPod Touch always reminds you (and others when you show it to them) that you were able to afford this. It's a work of art with no hidden function at all."
If you purchased "I am Rich", there's also a bridge for sale you might want to buy;)
The iPhone DevTeam has announced that the Pwnage Tool 2.0.2 will be released today allowing Jailbreaking of iPhone firmware 2.0.1.
"PwnageTool 2.0.2 is undergoing final checks and will be packaged, signed and should be uploaded within the next few hours, so count on it being released sometime on Thursday. This will be available via the PwnageTool software updater that is built in and checked when you start PwnageTool, we’ll also publish a link here for direct downloads.
* As always PwnageTool 2.0.2 contains Cydia, in fact it contains a new version of Cydia with some bugfixes and other general goodness, thanks saurik!
* Installer 4 isn’t released by RiPDev as yet so PwnageTool 2.0.2 does not include installer.app - check out the RiPDev blog for the latest information.
* WinPwn uses compatible bundles (as provided by Planetbeing’s XPwn code), so we anticipate that WinPwn will be updated soon after our PwnageTool release, so Windows users shouldn’t have to wait too long! Please remember the DevTeam doesn’t provide end-user support for WinPwn!"
Apple has released iPhone firmware 2.0.1 for the iPhone and iPod touch. It's available now through iTunes. The 249MB update's claim to fame is "bug fixes", lets hope it REALLY fixes the bugs that came with the 2.0 OS. Stay tuned.
***UPDATE***
AppleInsider is reporting more than bug fixes have been included with 2.0.1 firmware:
-You can now drag an app icon across multiple pages in one motion, rather than having to drag it, drop it, pick it up again and drag it over to next page, and repeat.
-Contacts are now more responsive.
-After installing 2.0.1, each successive backup is much faster.
-Apple may have changed the calibration of the iPhone's reception "bars" while connected to a 3G network to reflect a stronger signal than before.
-Keypad loads quicker.
-Screen rotation in Safari appears to be smoother.
-Some apps may ask to be updated after the firmware upgrade.
-Netshare still works (iPhone tethering application)
"That’s roughly double the number that were available when the store opened just over two weeks ago (on July 11, the same day the iPhone 3G went on sale)... Roughly 20% of the apps are free; 90% cost $10 or less. Most also work on the iPod touch," Elmer-Dewitt reports.
"Many consider this flood of software to be a bigger deal than the phone itself. Among smartphones, only the RIM Blackberry has created a comparable platform for so-called third-party programs, but because the Blackberry lacks a touch screen and accelerometer, its apps don’t compare with the iPhone’s in terms of features and ease of use," Elmer-Dewitt reports." The App Store reminds me of back in the day Palm applications. It seemed like every day I checked Palmgear there were more applications to install on my Palm Vx. It's all about the apps..
The findings, contained within the English-language 'Localizable.strings' file located in 'System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/WebKit.framework' are also accompanied by references to the Spotlight search, text-to-speech, file uploads, and the Finder." Via AppleInsider .

The good news is the tool will be able to Jailbreak the iPhone 3G, allowing you to run 3rd party applications as well as the App Store. The original iPhone with firmware 2.0 installed will be able to be unlocked and Jailbroken.
The iPhone Dev Team has posted a screenshot of the very soon to be released Pwnage Tool. As you can see from the above screenshot the Pwnage Tool will support the 1st iPhone, iPod touch, and iPhone 3G. The. Pwnage Tool will allow you to run jaibreak apps as well as the ability to still run applications from the App Store.
I was just browsing the applications that are available in the App Store and all I can say is WOW!!! The quality and quantity of applications on day 1 is simply amazing. I was actually surprised that there were so many FREE applications. If you're familiar with iTunes (at this point who isn't?), you'll feel right at home in the AppStore. As part of the iPhone 2.0 software you'll be able to access the App Store right from your device using the iPhone 3G's network, and the iPhone and iPod touch's WiFi connection (no need to connect to a computer). If you don't have an iPhone or iPod touch I can almost guarantee you'll want one after looking through the App Store.
"Apple's highly anticipated iPhone App Store launched earlier this morning, spawning a user-generated list of the most popular applications available at no cost. This article previews the top 10 with links, descriptions, and screenshots."
NEW YORK – July 10, 2008 – AOL today announced three new iPhone OS applications: AIM, the leading instant messaging service; AOL Radio, the most popular online radio service and recent recipient of an Apple Design Award; and Truveo, the leading video search engine are available as free downloads from the Apple App Store beginning today.
“With AIM, AOL Radio and Truveo for the iPhone, consumers now have access to the world’s largest instant messaging network, over 350 streaming radio stations and millions of online videos,” said Kevin Conroy, Executive Vice President of AOL. “Over the past twelve months, AOL has revitalized its Mac development efforts and we’re thrilled to be bringing our world-class communications and multi-media experiences to iPhone users around the world via the App Store.”
The new AIM, AOL Radio and Truveo applications for the iPhone were built using Apple’s iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) and provide users a rich, full-featured experience, with added features unique to the iPhone.
* AIM for iPhone brings together all of the core features of AIM – such as real-time communication, the Buddy List window and the ability to see when friends and contacts are online and available to chat – and combines them with a host of new capabilities that make IM’ing from the iPhone easy and convenient, whether over a Wi-Fi, EDGE, or 3G network.
AIM has been designed from the ground up to take advantage of the iPhone’s unique user interface and advanced capabilities. New features developed specifically for the iPhone include the use of Gestures, which allows users to simply tap to start a new message or to swipe a finger to switch between conversations; Favorites, which puts the buddies with whom you keep in touch at your fingertips; and the ability to easily incorporate a photo taken with the iPhone's built in camera as a Buddy Icon. AIM for iPhone will be available to users worldwide.
* AOL Radio for iPhone gives users in the U.S. immediate, free access to more than 350 best-in-breed stations including more than 150 local CBS RADIO stations and custom channels and more than 200 AOL Radio stations spanning 25 musical genres. AOL Radio for iPhone leverages the iPhone’s Core Location framework to detect a user's location and automatically displays CBS RADIO stations nearest to the user. Additionally, AOL Radio for iPhone automatically adapts to the current connection speed of the device providing low-bandwidth streams when on a cellular network versus higher quality audio for Wi-Fi connections.
At Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference in June, AOL Radio was highlighted during the iPhone Developer Showcase and received the Apple Design Award for “Best Entertainment Application.”
* Truveo Mobile Video Search for iPhone maximizes the device’s premium video experience and makes it easy for users to search and browse through millions of online videos while on the go. Truveo’s leading video search engine provides direct links to video content that’s been optimized for the iPhone from a wide variety of video sources including CNN, Discovery Channel, HBO, NBC, PBS, Channel, Comedy Central, MTV and YouTube. Localized versions of Truveo Mobile Video Search for iPhone will be available for the U.S., Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK, with support for additional countries to follow in the coming months.
All three applications are available for free from Apple’s App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/
More information on AIM, AOL Radio and Truveo Mobile Video Search for iPhone can be found at http://mobile.aol.com/iphone .
In addition to the AIM, AOL Radio and Truveo applications for the iPhone, AOL has also optimized many of its popular websites and services for the iPhone’s Safari browser including; AOL.com, AOL Mail, AOL Mobile Search, AOL Money & Finance, Moviefone, AOL Food, AOL Horoscopes, AOL TV Listings and AOL Shopping.
"Apple finally let developers know when their iPhone apps will be live on the App Store for users to download and use: around 9 am PST Thursday morning. That, at least, is when the embargo lifts and press can start writing about the specific applications. Presumably the App Store will go live, along with iPhone 2.0 software in general, around that time."

MacRumors is reporting that Apple has released a pre-release version of iTunes 7.7 for developers tonight. The Read Me of the installer lists:
"Use iTunes 7.7 to sync music, video, and more with iPhone 3G, and download applications from the iTunes Store exclusively designed for iPhone and iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later. Also use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home -- a free download from the App Store."
Of course it's not completely free as iPod touch users will have to pay $9.99 to upgrade to the 2.0 software (iPhone owners get this update for free), but still a very nice added benefit to doing so.
Unless Apple's Australian iPod touch page made a huge mistake, it looks like the App Store will be available on June 27th. This also means that the iPhone 2.0 Firmware will also be released that day. Stay tuned.
Engadget has been shown a "proof-of-concept" version of SlingPlayer for the iPhone and iPod touch. The problem is Apple hasn't accepted Sling into the iPhone developer program. It looks like Apple's walled garden, I mean "App Store" might not let developers in who might compete with iTunes. Why would you buy an episode of your favorite show from iTunes when you could stream it from your SlingPlayer to your iPhone for free?

Is this a sign that the 3G iPhone is on its way? Stay tuned.
"I can’t tell you how huge this is going to be. There will be thousands of iPhone programs, covering every possible interest. The iPhone will be valuable for far more than simple communications tasks; it will be the first widespread pocket desktop computer. You’re witnessing the birth of a third major computer platform: Windows, Mac OS X, iPhone," Pogue reports.
"Sure, there are add-on programs for the Treo, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile. But they’ll never achieve the ubiquity or popularity of iPhone apps, because Apple will preinstall the iPhone Apps Store right on every phone. That’s an online catalog of iPhone programs, which you can browse, download and install wirelessly, wherever you happen to be. That’s several thousand fewer barriers and steps than you’d encounter on the other smartphone platforms," Pogue reports.
"The release of iPhone 2.0 is over three months away, but I’ll stick my neck out and make a prediction: it will be a gigantic success, spreading the iPhone’s popularity both upward, into the corporate market, and downward, into the hands of the masses," Pogue reports. "iPhone 2.0 will turn this phone into an engineering tool, a game console, a free-calls Skype phone, a business tool, a dating service, an e-book reader, a chat room, a database, an Etch-a-Sketch…and that’s on Day One."
Apple has posted the iPhone SDK online and you can download it for FREE here .
CUPERTINO, California—March 6, 2008—Apple® today previewed its iPhone™ 2.0 software, scheduled for release this June, and announced the immediate availability of a beta release of the software to selected developers and enterprise customers. The iPhone 2.0 beta release includes both the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) as well as new enterprise features such as support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync to provide secure, over-the-air push email, contacts and calendars as well as remote wipe, and the addition of Cisco IPsec VPN for encrypted access to private corporate networks.
“We’re excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community with potentially thousands of native applications for iPhone and iPod touch,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPhone’s enterprise features combined with its revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface and advanced software architecture provide the best user experience and the most advanced software platform ever for a mobile device.”
The iPhone SDK provides developers with a rich set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and tools to create innovative applications for iPhone and iPod® touch. Starting today, anyone can download the beta iPhone SDK for free and run the iPhone Simulator on their Mac®. Apple today also introduced its new iPhone Developer Program, giving developers everything they need to create native applications, and the new App Store, a breakthrough way for developers to wirelessly deliver their applications to iPhone and iPod touch users.
With the iPhone SDK, third party developers will be able to build native applications for the iPhone with a rich set of APIs, including programming interfaces for Core OS, Core Services, Media and Cocoa Touch technologies. The iPhone SDK will allow developers to create amazing applications that leverage the iPhone’s groundbreaking Multi-Touch™ user interface, animation technology, large storage, built-in three-axis accelerometer and geographical location technology to deliver truly innovative mobile applications.
Apple has licensed Exchange ActiveSync from Microsoft and is building it right into the iPhone, so that iPhone will connect out-of-the-box to Microsoft Exchange Servers 2003 and 2007 for secure over-the-air push email, contacts, calendars and global address lists. Built-in Exchange ActiveSync support also enables security features such as remote wipe, password policies and auto-discovery. The iPhone 2.0 software supports Cisco IPsec VPN to ensure the highest level of IP-based encryption available for transmission of sensitive corporate data, as well as the ability to authenticate using digital certificates or password-based, multi-factor authentication. The addition of WPA2 Enterprise with 802.1x authentication enables enterprise customers to deploy iPhone and iPod touch with the latest standards for protection of Wi-Fi networks.
The iPhone 2.0 software provides a configuration utility that allows IT administrators to easily and quickly set up many iPhones, including password policies, VPN setting, installing certificates, email server settings and more. Once the configuration is defined it can be easily and securely delivered via web link or email to the user. To install, all the user has to do is authenticate with a user ID or password, download the configuration and tap install. Once installed, the user will have access to all their corporate IT services.
The iPhone 2.0 software release will contain the App Store, a new application that lets users browse, search, purchase and wirelessly download third party applications directly onto their iPhone or iPod touch. The App Store enables developers to reach every iPhone and iPod touch user. Developers set the price for their applications—including free—and retain 70 percent of all sales revenues. Users can download free applications at no charge to either the user or developer, or purchase priced applications with just one click. Enterprise customers will be able to create a secure, private page on the App Store accessible only by their employees. Apple will cover all credit card, web hosting, infrastructure and DRM costs associated with offering applications on the App Store. Third party iPhone and iPod touch applications must be approved by Apple and will be available exclusively through the App Store.
The iPhone SDK provides a reliable, fast and secure way to create innovative applications for the iPhone and iPod touch. In addition to the rich set of iPhone OS APIs, the iPhone SDK also provides advanced tools for creating native iPhone and iPod touch applications including: Xcode® for source code editing, project management and graphical debugging; Interface Builder with drag and drop interface creation and live preview; Instruments to monitor and optimize iPhone application performance in real time; and the iPhone Simulator to run and debug applications.
During the beta iPhone SDK program, a limited number of developers will be accepted into Apple’s new iPhone Developer Program and offered the ability to get code onto iPhones for testing. The Standard Program costs $99 (US) per year and gives members an iPhone SDK and development tools; access to pre-release iPhone software; technical support; the ability to get code onto iPhones for testing; and distribution of applications via the new App Store. The Enterprise Program costs $299 (US) per year.
In addition to these new iPhone network and security features, the beta iPhone 2.0 software provides several new Mail features such as the ability to view PowerPoint attachments, in addition to Word and Excel, as well as the ability to mass delete and move email messages.
• iTunes Store as hub - as expected, Apple will require future iPhone and iPod Touch applications to be distributed through Apple's iTunes Store.
• Apple as Application Gatekeeper - iLounge believes that Apple will act as a gatekeeper for the applications themselves and will formally approve or deny all software releases:
• No Accessory Support - no ability to support dock-based accessories (such as a GPS module), though the iPhone's own phone, Wi-Fi, and camera will reportedly accessible.
iLounge corroborates earlier rumors that the final SDK would be not ready for release at Apple's March 6th event. Instead, they echo that a beta will be available then, with the final release to await WWDC in June. Via MacDailyNews .
Apple aired a new commercial for the iPod touch during Wednesday night's American Idol.
I've taken the plunge and applied the new iPod Touch 1.1.4 update to my unhacked 16GB iPod Touch.
The upgrade process was rather uneventful. The software download took 11 minutes and I didn't have to do anything special to apply the 150MB+ update. When the 1.1.3 ROM was released, I also purchased the software update adding Mail, Maps, Weather, Notes, and Stocks. Applying the 1.1.4 update preserved my software and settings. Literally, when the update was done installing, all I needed to do was to disconnect my iPod from my computer and start using it.
As with other reports filtering in from around the Internet, I did not notice any changes in the applications or settings. I was experiencing some crashes when user Safari to read AintItCoolNews.com, AppleInsider.com, and EngadgetMobile.com. After the upgrade, I spent a few minutes surfing those three sites trying to get Safari to crash and I couldn't. Hopefully Safari crashes are a thing of the past.
So now we need to sit and wait. As some have speculated already, this update probably includes the code to support third-party native on the device applications from developers other than Apple. I should caution you that I am guessing here as there is no apparent changes to the OS, GUI, or applications that I was able to detect.
If I discover anything of interest, I will post more about it.
StyleTap is working on a version of their application that will allow Palm OS applications to run on the iPhone and iPod touch.

Apple has just announced updates to both the iPhone and iPod touch. The 16GB iPhone is available now for $499. The iPod touch is now available with 32GB of storage for $499.
A new Jailbreakin' app has come on the scene. iJailbreak is the simplest Jailbreak solution to date. This is the first ever, over the air Jailbreak for the iPhone and iPod touch. There is no computer required. All you need is to have a Jailbroken iPhone or touch running Frimware 1.1.1, or 1.1.2, and have Installer App. on it. This process takes about 45 minutes to do since it's being done over the air & no computer involved. Make sure you check out CrunchGear for more details.
"So I've had the chance to examine the 1.1.3 firmware on a deeper level (using a technique not developed by me and which I can't release so don't ask) and have noticed some interesting changes behind the scenes that are quite blogworthy:
- SpringBoard no longer needs to be modified (via SummerBoard) in order to show extra applications in the /Applications folder.
- All applications now run as the user 'mobile' instead of as root.
- Preferences are now stored in /var/mobile rather than in /var/root.
What does this all mean? I'll tell you what it means.
The iPhone 1.1.3 firmware is ready for official installable applications.
Even though there are no applications available for purchase (besides the iPod Touch's $20 "upgrade package"), the installation architecture appears to be there already."
