StyleTap Announces Immediate Availability of StyleTap® Platform for iPhone
StyleTap Announces Immediate Availability of StyleTap® Platform for iPhone®

TORONTO, Canada, March 22, 2010 – StyleTap Inc. today announced the release of StyleTap Platform for iPhone®, which allows over 30,000 applications originally written for Palm OS® to run on iPhone and iPod touch® devices.

"We have found that many users and businesses have made very large investments in acquiring and developing mobile applications, and these applications have been enhanced and refined to fit their needs like a glove," said Gregory Sokoloff, CEO of StyleTap. "With all the new smartphone platforms, users are reluctant to lock themselves into one platform or to make the same investment over and over for each new platform. StyleTap's cross-platform family of products can help make these problems go away.

"Naturally, we would prefer to be able to offer this product through the App Store, but unfortunately this is not currently possible due to Apple's restrictive policies, and instead this version of StyleTap will run on jailbroken devices. Although there are many useful and entertaining applications available through the Apple App Store, we continue to receive a flood of emails from users telling us that they need StyleTap in order to keep running the applications, not available on the App Store, that are critical to their lives and businesses."

StyleTap Platform for iPhone supports standard features that include TCP/IP networking, audio recording and playback, the ability to use the multi-gigabyte storage as a virtual memory card, and cut/copy/paste of text between native and Palm OS applications. It also provides innovative capabilities such as giving Palm OS applications access to the iPhone GPS by providing location information in standard GPS NMEA format.

StyleTap Platform for iPhone is the newest member of the StyleTap Platform family, which includes StyleTap Platform for Windows Mobile™ and StyleTap Platform for Symbian OS™. With StyleTap Platform, the same binary executable application can run on more smartphones and PDAs than for any other software runtime, while at the same time native code execution is supported on each device. For developers, this is "write once, profit everywhere."

Interested users and developers can visit www.styletap.com/iphone for instructions on obtaining a free 14-day trial of the iPhone version. StyleTap Platform for iPhone can be purchased for US$49.95.

For more information about StyleTap Platform for iPhone, please visit www.styletap.com and subscribe to the StyleTap news blog.

  Classic v2.0 release now complete!
As we already posted, Classic ROM update has been released last week and brought HotSync to Classic on Pre. We were waiting for the Mojo part and would like to let you know that it is now available. You can complete the update by downloading it from Classic listing in the App Catalog.

Besides HotSync in v2.0 many of you already successfully use (a detailed tutorial is available here), by completing the update you get more features and surprises: full screen mode, quick keyboard mode switch, improved reset functionality, reduced power consumption when idle and more. The complete list of v2.0 features and improvements is available at Tech Spec page on our website.

The favorite new feature in Classic v2.0 might be preloaded ClassicApps, a bundle of free Palm OS applications that you can get if you simply tap Install Free Apps option from the Classic menu.

When download and installation are completed, you will be able to use some of the most popular Palm OS applications through Classic on your Pre. Some of them are completely free while some are time-limited trials. Here is the list of apps that you get with a single tap in Classic:

A complete list of the Palm OS applications bundled with Classic can be found here .

Classic is one of the most used applications on my Pre. Now with the ability to HotSync it really is having two of the best smartphone operating systems on one device. If you have a Pre, do yourself a favor and get Classic. It will open your Pre up to the thousands of Palm OS applications already available.

HotSync coming to the Pre very soon

One of the best and most important application available for the Palm Pre is Classic from MotionApps . I use Classic a few times a day on my Pre. This one program will let you run thousands of Palm OS applications on your Pre. According to MotionApps and the above video, Pre users will be able to sync in Classic using good ol' HotSync. MotionApps says they are waiting for Palm to release the next update for the Pre which will add HotSync capabilities. If you own a Pre you should definitely try the 7 day demo available in the Pre's App Catalog. It's like having 2 great operating systems running on one device. Classic opens the door to the thousands of available Palm OS applications, and lets you run them on your Pre.

Palm OS HotSync coming to Classic

PreCentral is reporting that Palm OS HotSync will be coming to Classic for Palm webOS. There's no ETA, but it will be free for current users. MotionApps , makers of Classic want to ensure all 3rd party conduits work before release.

New Palm Pre commercial seems more like an antidepressant commercial

Hopefully she's using the Pre's multitasking ability to look for a Psychiatrist, schedule an appointment, and research an antidepressant.

Classic for Palm Pre now available

Keep using Palm OS applications you've grown to love. With Classic you can use mature and perfected applications that have been developed over the years and run them on your new powerful Pre. Just go ahead, have it all.

While the Pre is going to debut with only around 20 applications in the App Catalog one of those apps will let you run thousands of Palm OS applications on your Pre right now. Classic can be downloaded via the App Catalog on the Pre. A 7 day fully functional trial is available, Classic will cost $29.99 upon registering.

$29.99 is a bit expensive for an application, and I have a feeling the price will get reduced like many iPhone developers did when they realized people aren't going to pay that much for an application. If you're getting a Pre and you want the ability to run thousands of Palm OS applications along with new Palm webOS applications right out of the gate give Classic a try (at least you can try before you buy with Palm's App Catalog;) ).

The 1st Palm Pre Review Is In
The Boy Genius has posted the 1st Palm Pre review. It's a good read, there's some things he likes and some he dislikes, but all in all it's a positive review for the Pre.

Conclusion:

"Everyone’s expectation are set enormously high for this device and it really feels like the original iPhone launch again. Well, maybe not quite as insane but still. Palm has done a masterful job of crafting and molding the hype factor, but there seems to be an underlying issue. In being so secretive, they’ve let people’s imaginations run wild and expectations couldn’t possibly be higher.

The OS is great. There’s no ifs ands or buts; it’s really refreshing to see something that’s brand new with a UI unlike anything else out there. The only problem with this is, Palm’s never been a hardware company that anyone’s really cared about. They have been the furthest thing from innovative since circa-2003 — their hardware has always been second rate at best and it doesn’t seem to be changing now. Couple that with the nation’s underdog carrier at a $299 price-point (before rebate), and we’re not sure how many people are going to be lined up overnight, yet we’re pretty confident once people are able to play a real unit themselves, there will be more than a lot of happy Palm Pre customers.

Once the initial Pre launch is over and done with and all the hype, smoke and mirrors are clear though, we can see Palm being pretty successful moving forward. Hell, Palm has converted tons of people into raging Pre fanboys before they could even see the phone in person! Very Apple-esque"

Palm requests Tealpoint to stop selling TealOS
Back in February I posted about a new Palm OS app called TealOS . I use it on my Treo 755p, it's an awesome application. It gives you the look and part of the feel of the Palm webOS running on any Palm OS Treo, Centro, or PDA. The developers @ TealPoint have constantly updated the app and added new features. I purchased TealOS because I needed something to give me the "fix" while waiting for Palm to release the Pre. I also had a feeling that this application wouldn't go over well with Palm, and they would likely ask TealPoint to remove the application. That's exactly what has happened. TealPoint has posted a notice on the TealOS page .

"IMPORTANT! - A Palm's request, we will stop selling TealOS on Monday March 30. Copies purchased prior to this date, however will continue to function."

Teal OS brings webOS (sorta) to Palm OS devices

I saw the above video over @ PreThinking showing a new Palm OS application that brings some of the Pre Palm webOS UI to Palm OS devices. This new application is called TealOS .

"More than just a visual skin, TealOS is a multi-functional application launcher that gives your time-honored handheld the exciting look and feel of the newest devices. Providing a powerful and intuitive way to organize your activities and work flow, it runs under PalmOS but simulates the card-based interface of WebOS on the new Palm Pre. TealOS comes complete with support for thumbnail image cards, a translucent applications screen, customizable background images, and even a popup wave launcher. While keeping your existing phone and applications, it's the next best thing to a brand new phone."

I installed Teal OS on my Treo 755p and am really impressed by what the developer of Teal OS has been able to do. If you're waiting for the Pre or want to breathe some new life into your ancient Palm OS device ;) check Teal OS out, very cool!!!

Palm's Nova OS smartphone to be Sprint exclusive?
On Thursday January 8, 2009 Palm will FINALLY show off their next generation operating system code named "Nova". Palm OS fans have been waiting years for this day, and from rumblings on the web the OS has been described as "amazing". MoibleBurn is reporting that the smartphone will be a Sprint exclusive initially. This makes sense as Palm has given Sprint exclusivity when they introduced the Treo 700p, Treo 755p, and the Centro. We'll know for sure in 2 days.

Palm hoping for a spark with Nova OS
"Palm is pinning its hopes for renewed success on the launch of its new operating system, code-named "Nova," which it will debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

When the curtain goes up on CES in Las Vegas, Palm hopes its Nova platform, details of which it has guarded quite closely, will wow and give the beleaguered handset maker a much-needed comeback. Earlier this month Palm, beset by falling sales as it struggles in the smartphone market, released its revenue numbers ahead of its second fiscal quarter results, posting between $190 million and $195 million, well below Wall Street expectations.

Palm brought in Jon Rubenstein, formerly an Apple product development specialist who led development on the iMac and iPod, to help turn around the flagging company in mid-2007. Rubenstein has said that Nova will bridge the market between enterprise-oriented BlackBerry devices from Research In Motion and more consumer-centric ones like Apple's iPhone 3G."   "Nova" Next Generation Palm OS Confirmed for CES
A BusinessWeek article confirms that Palm will be showing off its next generation Palm OS codenamed "Nova" at CES on January 8, 2009 . Here's some highlights:

• "the goal is to create products that bridge the gap between Research In Motion's (RIMM) BlackBerry devices, oriented to work and e-mail, and Apple's iPhone, oriented to fun."

• The article implies that the platform would be capable of acting as an OS for not only smartphones, but gameboy like consoles and e-book readers.

• Palm believes they can grab 2% of the market; that RIM will dominate the majority of share and the iPhone will have 10%.

• The OS would also help phones make "smarter use of data about you. For example, your smartphone could send you an e-mail the day before your next business trip, advising you on the weather conditions in your destination city."

  Palm Updates Sprint Centro Smartphones

Looks like the Palm Centro for Sprint is about to get a holiday makeover. In a press release issued earlier today, Palm unveiled the Centro refreshes that were alluded to in the September quarterly conference call.

The two new additions to the Centro family, currently only available for Sprint, feature:

The new Centro smartphones will begin to roll into select retail outlets on October 19, and will be come available at Sprint retail locations and online at Palm.com and Sprint.com starting on November 2.

Palm is also relasing a trio (not Treo) of Cento accessories to compliment the new phones in the way of a new leather slide case, leather flip case, and car charger.

According to Palm's press release, the new smartphones will also have a new lower price when you agree to a 2-year contract, including a data plan that is $25 a month, and after a $100 mail-in rebate. When all is said and done, you can pick up a new Centro for $79.99; previously retailing at $99.99 at the Centro's initial launch.

There is a lot of like about the new Centro smartphones. I'm glad to see that Palm is actively marketing multiple colors for their smartphones. I also like that face that Palm has returned to using the soft-touch paint as it one of my favorite features of my Treo 755p. But the best part about this pair of devices is that Palm is pushed past the 64MB mark. There have been plenty of time where I wished my Treo had 128MB on board.

For more details on the pair of new Centro smartphones, check out the Palm Centro website.

Palm OS II-based smartphones now due H2 2009
"Palm's next-gen operating system will be finished by the end of the year, the company promised late last week.

"The company said the Linux-based system software known as Palm OS II and 'Nova' is "on track" for completion by the end of calendar 2008. Handsets based on the OS will following the first half of 2009, it said.

Palm announced back in April 2007 that it would develop the next generation of the Palm OS itself, a move made to ensure it was not tied to a third-party, either Japan's Access, the current owner, or anyone else should Access choose to offload it.

As most OS development projects do, Palm OS II has slipped a bit. Palm CEO Ed Colligan indicated in May 2007 that handhelds equipped with the software would be available in 2007. Two months on, and that timeframe had expanded to 2008, and by October 2007, Colligan was saying fans will have to wait until the end of 2008.

No doubt Palm will say the completion of the OS within that timeframe indicates the release hasn't slipped again, but most pundits will undoubtedly measure the Palm OS II's overall development time up until the first handhelds pre-loaded with it ship." Via The Register .

  PalmGear Back In Action

PalmGear.com, one of the early staples in the Palm ecosystem, returned to service today under new management.

PalmGear.com, was shutdown earlier this year by parent company, Motricity. and customer accounts were migrated to sister site, PocketGear.com. During the process, many freeware and shareware applications disappeared while most commercial Palm OS software was rolled into PocketGear site.

Under new management, lead by a former Motricity executive, PalmGear.com has gone back online in all it's former glory. To help celebrate the return of PalmGear.com to the Palm community, a 20% discount promotion is in effect for all of the software being sold on the site. During check out, use the coupon code "NEWOWNERS". The code will remain in effect until September 14th, 2008.

I'm glad to see PalmGear.com return. I do hope that the PalmGear brand can be rebuilt by the new owners. I'm even more excited that I don't have to deal with the old PocketGear.com site that I griped about in my 1SRC Editorial, "Adios, Motricity." And while I have yet to receive a "welcome back" email that I suggested in the editorial, I have confirmed that my old PalmGear.com account is still in effect providing me access to all of the great Palm OS software and license codes that I had previously purcased.

Welcome back, PalmGear! We've missed you.

The Sprint Centro gets a boost
"A new software tune up for the Sprint Centro gives your smartphone several new features and shortcuts. One highlight is support for the My Location feature in Google Mobile Maps. My Location approximates your location so when you're getting directions, you only need to select “My Location” rather than input your address. This makes it even easier to find nearby restaurants or businesses, check local traffic, or find the best route to your next destination."

  Palm Lands Duarte

Engadget is reporting that Palm has hired well known software interface designer Matias Duarte. The company has confirmed that Mr. Duarte has been working for Palm since September 2007.

Mr. Duarte's title at Palm is listed as Senior Director, Human Interface and User Experience and is likely working on the new user interface for Palm's next generation Linux operating system, Palm OS II/Nova.

Bringing in Mr. Duarte is likely the work of Jon Rubeinstein who is leading an internal revolution at Palm with the intention of making the company relevant in the mobile computer market.

What I find interesting about this is that Palm has stated that Palm OS II/Nova is due to have the core OS completed by the end of this calendar year. Once the core is complete, the work on the interface would begin. It sounds like Palm has an entire team already working on the interfaces for the next generation Treo and Centro smartphones.

Is this yet another piece of evidence that suggests that Palm OS II/Nova will be ready before the middle of 2009? I think so.

Rumor: Treo 700wx Windows Mobile 6.0 Upgrade

Later this summer, it would appear that Palm is planning on releasing some ROM upgrades for their devices.

Of particular note is the Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional for the Verizon Treo 700wx. Note that this is not a Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional upgrade and it will not be made available for the Verizon Treo 700w. (The Treo 700w has 32MB of RAM versus the 64MB on the Treo 700wx.) Palm is also reportedly working on two minor upgrades for the Sprint Centro and Treo 755p for Verizon that will likely be released later this year.

According to the latest rumor, the Windows Mobile 6.0 update for the Treo 700wx is no different than the already released update for the AT&T Treo 750. Also like the Windows Mobile 6.0 update for the Treo 750, there are some important things to consider before applying the upgrade:

I honestly never expected this update to be released for the Treo 700wx. I'm glad to see that Palm will be releasing the update. A lot of Treo 700wx customers have been asking for it.

[Thanks to Ain't No Snitch for the tip.]

Palm Gains After Centro Wins U.S. Users From iPhone

Being the Palm fan boy I am, it makes me happy to see Palm increasing their market share. I've watched Palm go from being the market share leader in terms of PDA's and smartphones. As everyone knows the last few years have been a struggle for Palm. So it's great to hear they are finally gaining market share, and not losing it.

" June 2 (Bloomberg) -- Palm Inc. had the biggest jump in six weeks in Nasdaq trading after a researcher said its Centro e-mail phone won sales in the U.S. from Apple Inc.'s iPhone.

Palm had 13.4 percent of the market for advanced phones in the first quarter, up from 7.9 percent in the previous period, according to Framingham, Massachusetts-based research firm IDC. Apple's share fell to 19.2 percent from 26.7 percent. Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry dominated the market with 44.5 percent, up from 35.1 percent.

The Centro, which sells for $99 with a carrier contract, debuted last year in a bid to lure more cost-minded consumers to Palm. The price is a quarter the cost of the iPhone. Anticipation that Apple will release a new iPhone with faster Web browsing also hurt sales of that device, said IDC analyst Ryan Reith. Analysts expect a new iPhone to go on sale this month, he said.

"The Centro's been a success because it's very attractive to someone who doesn't want to pay $300 to $400,'' Reith said in an interview. "This summer, competition in this market will be as intense as it's ever been." Via Bloomberg.com .

StyleTap's Palm OS Emulator coming to iPhone & iPod touch

StyleTap has officially announced that they will be bringing their Palm OS Emulator to the iPhone and iPod touch.

"The iPhone is one of the hottest new mobile devices out there," said Gregory Sokoloff, CEO of StyleTap Inc., "And the response to our video has convinced us that many, many consumers, and companies, will eagerly jump at the change to buy iPhone devices if they can continue to run their must-have applications."

According to the company technically, StyleTap CrossPlatform is an excellent fit with the iPhone, as the powerful processor and large screen allows applications written for Palm OS devices to run at full speed and at full screen resolution. The iPhone touch screen technology works in a very natural way with mobile applications originally designed for touch screen devices." Via PalmInfocenter .

Palm readies next-gen ‘Web 2.0’ OS

Palm's CEO, Ed Colligan has done an interview with APC and we're finally starting to hear what Palm has in store with their next generation operating system.

"So let’s talk about the future – and specifically the forthcoming all-new Palm OS, which is codenamed Nova and said to be built around Linux. Colligan calls it “Palm OS” and later “Palm 2.0”, both times his fingers drawing quotation marks in the air as he speaks. Palm 2.0, as in Web 2.0, although he makes it clear that “I’m not coming up with the branding right now – whether it’s Palm OS 2.0 or Next Generation, we’re not coming up with the branding right now. But this is something different to this” he says, pointing to the Centro.

Colligan speaks of this as being a “next-generation operating system with much more capabilities, driven around the Internet and Web-based applications”. It reminds us of a very modern take on the original OS, as well as a revisiting of the strategy which saw Palm create everything from the OS to the handhelds. It worked fine for Palm in the early days, and it’s working pretty well for Apple too.

“We’re focused on executing our own system, mostly because we really believe that to create the most compelling solution it should be an integrated package much like we started with the Palm OS and doing the original Palm Pilots: we did the operating system, we did the hardware and we did the whole synching architecture and the desktop tie-in, which is equivalent to the Web these days. One of the things we wanted to do is to make sure that we had an end-to-end solution we really controlled and could deliver the end-user experience we want to deliver. We think it’s going to be stunning and breakthrough in its execution, and we’re working on some very exciting new devices to go with it”.

And for at least the short term, that OS will continue to be offered in low-end devices typified by the Centro. “Centro is our consumer line of products, the start of a product line to hit that demographic and price point” Colligan says. “Centro will be strictly Palm OS”.

At the same time, Palm will continue to promote the Treo line of Windows Mobile smartphones to business customers. “Microsoft is the de facto standard in corporate email, and I think they should be the de facto standard in mobile email. If you have an Exchange server today you can already get mobile push email without installing a single other piece of third-party equipment, so it’s pretty easy to deploy. I don’t believe we could ever create a position in the business community that competes with Microsoft, it just wouldn’t make any sense.”

That ‘next generation’ Palm OS will slot in between the Centro and Treo lines under a new ‘prosumer’ brand that’s yet to be decided, Colligan explains. “We’re going to continue to look at those three line areas – consumer, prosumer and enterprise. Treo is today more of our mainstream prosumer product which is extended into the enterprise, but over time you’ll see some branding work done on the top two to make sure they’re really well delineated.”

iPhone takes huge chunk of market share in North America

"Canalys has produced a report showing the iPhone has grown massively in North America. The study looked specifically at smartphone market share statistics in Q3, and the iPhone, in a surprisingly short time span, has managed to grab second position. A 27% market share is nothing to scoff at; what Apple has done in a few months, others have failed to do in years.

Smartphones running Symbian, Linux and Palm OS all fall behind Apple's iPhone. This is ever more stunning because the iPhone is only available via one carrier, in contrast, the other platforms can be procured from various cellular networks. This dramatically increases their market penetration. From the perspective of a business model, these figures are simply astronomical." Via Gizmodo .

Apple iPhone already leads Windows Mobile in North American market share, Q3 2007
"In its first full quarter of sales, the iPhone has already climbed past Microsoft’s entire lineup of Windows Mobile smartphones in North America, according to figures compiled by Canalys and published by Symbian. That puts the iPhone ahead of smartphones running Symbian, Linux, and the Palm OS, but behind the first place RIM BlackBerry. The figures mesh with retail sales data already reported by NPD, which similarly described the size of the US market with a 27% chunk bit out by Apple’s iPhone," Daniel Eran Dilger reports for RoughlyDrafted.

"Apple’s debut at second place across the entire North American smartphone market region for the third quarter ending in September is particularly noteworthy because the iPhone was only being sold in the US, and is only available through AT&T; all of the other mobile platforms are available to Sprint, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile as well as AT&T," Dilger reports. "The iPhone wasn’t available in the significant markets of Canada and Mexico, along with parts of the US that AT&T does not service, including much of Vermont, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Alaska."

Customers who are using pervious versions of Documents To Go can upgrade to the latest version for $29.99.

Linux-based Palm OS will debut in 2009

"Palm, Inc.'s new chairman, Jon Rubinstein, has revealed in an interview with Dow Jones Newswires that Palm is still 18 months away from launching a new Linux-based OS. This means a new Palm OS will not hit the streets until sometime in 2009.

Rubinstein's statement seems to contradict earlier statements by CEO Ed Colligan who said he expected the OS to be out by the end of 2008. It looks like Palm has pushed back their OS launch by 6 months or so."

This certainly doesn't bode well for Palm, 2009????
