Gartner: iPhone No. 3 worldwide smartphone in 2009
"Apple Inc.'s iPhone in 2009 more than doubled its sales from the previous year and moved up into third place among global smartphones, according to a report from Gartner.

Nokia had 46.9 percent of the market with about 80.9 million sales, and Research in Motion had 19.9 percent with 34.3 million sales.

Cupertino-based Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) had about 14.4 percent of sales in the total mobile operating system market, Gartner said.

In 2008 Apple had 8.2 percent of the market with about 11.4 million units.

Apple sold a record 8.7 million iPhones in the last quarter alone, a growth rate of 100 percent over the year-ago quarter.

Another big gainer was Mountain View-based Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG). Its Android moved up to 3.9 percent in 2009 from less than a 1 percent share in 2008.

Sunnyvale-based Palm Inc. (NASDAQ:PALM) Web OS had 0.7 percent of the global market with about 1.2 million units sold."

Nokia to cut smartphone offerings in half in 2010
Reuters is reporting that Nokia will be cutting its smartphone offerings in half in 2010. The move comes as Nokia continues to see its share of the smartphone market decline due to increasing competition from Apple, Palm, Google, and RIM.

Nokia continues to sell more smartphones than any of its rivals, but has lost ground as competition grows.

"We see ... really fierce competition certainly in the high end, but we also see it in the mid to low end of smartphones increasing," Jo Harlow, the new chief of Nokia's smartphone unit, said in a webcast on Thursday.

"We will defend our position, but we believe we also have tools to play offense as well as defense," said Harlow."

Nokia sues Apple for infringement of Nokia GSM, UMTS and WLAN patents
Espoo, Finland - Nokia announced that it has today filed a complaint against Apple with the Federal District Court in Delaware, alleging that Apple's iPhone infringes Nokia patents for GSM, UMTS and wireless LAN (WLAN) standards.

As a leading innovator in wireless communications, Nokia has created one of the strongest and broadest patent portfolios in the industry, investing more than EUR 40 billion in R&D during the last two decades. Much of this intellectual property, including the patents in suit, has been declared essential to industry standards. Nokia has already successfully entered into license agreements including these patents with approximately 40 companies, including virtually all the leading mobile device vendors, allowing the industry to benefit from Nokia's innovation.

The ten patents in suit relate to technologies fundamental to making devices which are compatible with one or more of the GSM, UMTS (3G WCDMA) and wireless LAN standards. The patents cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption and are infringed by all Apple iPhone models shipped since the iPhone was introduced in 2007.

"The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for," said Ilkka Rahnasto, Vice President, Legal & Intellectual Property at Nokia. "Apple is also expected to follow this principle. By refusing to agree appropriate terms for Nokia's intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia's innovation."

Palm's stock soars as Nokia acquisition rumor takes off
"Shares of Palm Inc. rebounded early this week on a European rumor that Nokia may buy the company and on rumors that the company's recently announced secondary stock offering would price soon.

Shares of the Sunnyvale mobile device maker (NASDAQ:PALM) rose almost 14 percent on Monday to close at $15.95 a share. Palm rose strongly earlier this year after it introduced its Pre smart phone, hitting $16.80 a share on July 1 after drifting as low as $1.14 in December.

But its shares fell below $14 this month based on reports of sluggish sales of the Pre and a disappointing earnings report on Sept. 17.

The shares closed at $17.07 on Tuesday, up about 7 percent from Monday's close.

The rumor that Nokia might want to buy Palm sent its shares up 13 percent in Frankfurt before the U.S. market opened, despite skepticism from analysts there about such a deal." Via Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal .

Nokia E Series Event was a great experience

I got invited to attend a Nokia E Series Event tonight at the Nokia Flagship Store in NYC. I met a bunch of really cool people in the tech world as well as some Nokia Corporate Employees who wanted to show off the Nokia E Series devices and get our input on them and future Nokia devices. Nokia also allowed us to break up into groups and design the ultimate Nokia phone and give a presentation on what it would be. It was great to work and feed off of great ideas to create the phone we wanted, what was even cooler is that Hugo Hernandez, Director of E Series Marketing for Nokia, and Chanse Arrington, Nokia Product Manager actually listened and took notes on our ideas. I have to give Nokia huge props to open themselves up, listen to our ideas, and let us constructively criticize some of their smartphones. It's very clear that Nokia is serious about getting more involved in the US market and they're listening to us.

Nokia announces the Nokia E72 and 5530 XpressMusic

Nokia E72 builds on successful formula with slim dimensions and comprehensive messaging solutions

Swift, slim and resourceful are three words that accurately describe the new Nokia E72, which was unveiled at the Nokia Connection event in Singapore today. Nokia's latest full QWERTY smartphone brings a rich mobile email and instant messaging experience right out of the box, making it the ideal device for people that want to be productive in both their personal and professional lives.

Building on the formula from the hugely successful Nokia E71, Nokia's best selling QWERTY device to date, this latest arrival in Nokia's Eseries family maintains essential elements of its predecessor, whilst still improving its capabilities in a number of areas. "Despite the outstanding market performance of the Nokia E71, we still continually look for ways to enhance the device," said Ilari Nurmi, Vice President at Nokia. "So we included the desktop like email experience from the Nokia E75 and gave it a new optical navigation key for more intuitive scrolling through menus, emails and fast panning of images. We also upgraded the camera to 5 megapixels and added a standard 3.5 mm audio jack."

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic touches all the right notes for music lovers

Nokia today introduced the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic, a compact XpressMusic device that uses a touch interface for accessing people and content on the brilliantly clear homescreen. The 'scrolling' Contacts Bar provides direct access to 20 people and their latest conversations and media updates. The homescreen also features one touch shortcuts to content and popular social networks, like Facebook and MySpace. The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic follows in the footsteps of the top-rated Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, expanding the touch XpressMusic phone range with a youthful device that has a solid stainless steel frame finish and comes in five vivid colors.

At the core of the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is the music and entertainment experience. It is an ideal device for those who wish to quickly and easily access, share and mix a huge selection of media. In true XpressMusic form, the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic is a great music player with 27 hours of playback time, excellent audio quality and a 4 GB memory card for storing music and other media. Videos, either self made or from social media sites such as Youtube and Facebook can be enjoyed on the brilliantly clear 2.9 inch widescreen display. New music can be purchased through the Nokia Music Store, either directly on the phone or through a PC. The music collection is easily managed and can be synchronized with the PC using the Nokia Music for PC application. Calls and music can be conveniently managed and listened to with the Nokia Stereo Headset WH-205 with tangle-free cable.

Palm did what Nokia, RIM, and Microsoft couldn’t: build a better experience than Apple
"When I sat down at the beginning of the Palm Pre announcement press conference I was expecting to watch the death of a company. Palm? Give me a break. It would NEVER do anything interesting and Nokia, Microsoft, RIM, and expecially Apple were about to kick it into the deathbin of history.

I was wrong. WAY WAY WAY wrong.

Palm just did what Nokia and Microsoft and RIM couldn’t do: deliver a better experience than Steve Jobs did.

Anyway, the bottom line is Palm has a real winner here. It shows that you can never count a company out. Even one that looks like it’s already out of the game."

Nokia to buy out rest of Symbian for $410 million, offer it royalty-free
"Nokia on Tuesday said it will buy the 52.1% of Symbian it doesn't already own for approximately 264 million euros (US$410 million) in cash and will make the software royalty-free in response to the rising threat of companies like Apple and Google.

Aude Lagorce reports for MarketWatch, "Nokia, which currently owns a 47.9% stake in the company, is buying out the shareholdings of Panasonic, Siemens AG and Ericsson. Nokia also expects Samsung to accept the offer."

"In recent years Symbian has faced rising competition from Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Mobile, Research in Motion and Apple, Inc., who are all making operating systems for complex phones that also work as organizers, e-mail devices and music players," Lagorce reports."

Nokia vows touch phone in late 2008, no Windows
"Nokia at its press conference for the Mobile World Congress expo set a timeframe for unveiling the company's first-ever touchscreen phone as well as clarified its operating system plans. Although few details have been released for the device itself, Nokia now intends to release a touchscreen phone in the second half of 2008. The handset will use an enhanced version of the Symbian Series 60 OS dubbed S60 Touch and is likely to sport many of the iPhone-like features showcased a year ago, including a natural-gesture photo browser and music playback controls.

However, reports of Nokia using Windows Mobile are currently false, company chief Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said during the event. While not willing to rule out the prospect entirely, the executive had no announcements of the sort for Mobile World Congress and stated that the company "[doesn't] have plans to do Windows in mobile at the moment." Kallasvuo did not acknowledge Microsoft claims that the two firms were in talks for a partial switch in the future to the pocket Windows OS." Via Electronista .

Nokia CEO 'paranoid' about iPhone competition
"Nokia CEO Olli Pekka Kallasvuo said he is “paranoid” about Apple’s entry into the cell phone market. Kallasvuo made the comments on Thursday during Nokia’s earnings conference call.

Even though Apple’s goal is to sell 10 million iPhone’s by the end of 2008, Nokia said the significance of the iPhone should not be underestimated.

Kallasvuo went on to say that Nokia will spend more on research to combat the threat from Apple and Research in Motion’s BlackBerry product line." Via Macworld .

  I'm a Nokia

Nokia is going full force with their "Open to Anything" campaign and it's clear who the message is aimed at. I wonder if we'll see "I'm a Nokia" ad similar to Apple's "I'm a Mac" touting Nokia's openness compared to Apple's iPhone;)

Nokia's latest ad takes on iPhone

Nokia's "Open to anything" ad is a clear rip on Apple's closed iPhone. You can't blame Nokia for trying to capitalize on the iPhone's biggest shortcoming. Maybe this ad coupled with the slack Apple is taking for blocking 3rd party apps from the iPhone will make the Cupertino crew "open" up a little more. We can only hope...

Sprint to offer WiMAXed out Nokia N800
According to Just Another Mobile Phone Blog , Sprint will offer a Nokia N800 with a WiMAX radio in it in 2008.

"Sprint will offer a Mobile WiMAX-enabled version of Nokia's N800 Internet Tablet to North American customers next year, LinuxDevices has learned. The new device will support Sprint's grand scheme of making WiMAX-based 4G wireless services available to over 100 million people during 2008."

"At the LinuxWorld conference in San Francisco this week, LinuxDevices spoke with Dr. Ari Jaaksi (photo at right), Nokia's director of open source. Asked if the combination of VoIP and Mobile WiMAX might cannibalize Nokia's mobile phone business, Jaaksi replied, "WiMAX could change the cellular landscape; however, it's a question of the maturity of the technology, and how it will be priced."

He added that he thought it important for Nokia to investigate new technologies, noting that "Linux is ideal for that."

Jaaksi said the WiMAX-enabled N800 would "most probably" include WiFi and Bluetooth as well. He felt that interference problems could be minimized, noting, "We had the same interference with Bluetooth and WiFi initially, but we solved that."

Another day, another Palm buyout rumor
I read this article on Brighthand about the latest rumor of Palm being purchased. This time the buyer is none other than Nokia.

"Citing unnamed sources, Unstrung is reporting that the bidding process of Palm has already begun, with Nokia up against at least one private equity firm."

This story is nothing new. It seems that Palm is being bought out on a weekly basis and nothing ever transpires. I doubt there's any truth to this, but stranger things have happened. Treos running Windows?? Stay tuned:)
