Apple has basically confirmed that the iPhone in Gizmodo's possession is the next generation iPhone.
What's new
Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x460 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic
What's changed
• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

"For this particular occasion, Apple has once again reserved the very conference center where the company announced the three previous versions of the iPhone," Messany reports. "So all signs, indeed, point to June 22nd proving the 4th gen iPhone's 'big day.' Knowing Apple, however, we probably won't know for sure until the evening of June 21st." Via MacDailyNews .

TORONTO, Canada, March 22, 2010 – StyleTap Inc. today announced the release of StyleTap Platform for iPhone®, which allows over 30,000 applications originally written for Palm OS® to run on iPhone and iPod touch® devices.
"We have found that many users and businesses have made very large investments in acquiring and developing mobile applications, and these applications have been enhanced and refined to fit their needs like a glove," said Gregory Sokoloff, CEO of StyleTap. "With all the new smartphone platforms, users are reluctant to lock themselves into one platform or to make the same investment over and over for each new platform. StyleTap's cross-platform family of products can help make these problems go away.
"Naturally, we would prefer to be able to offer this product through the App Store, but unfortunately this is not currently possible due to Apple's restrictive policies, and instead this version of StyleTap will run on jailbroken devices. Although there are many useful and entertaining applications available through the Apple App Store, we continue to receive a flood of emails from users telling us that they need StyleTap in order to keep running the applications, not available on the App Store, that are critical to their lives and businesses."
StyleTap Platform for iPhone supports standard features that include TCP/IP networking, audio recording and playback, the ability to use the multi-gigabyte storage as a virtual memory card, and cut/copy/paste of text between native and Palm OS applications. It also provides innovative capabilities such as giving Palm OS applications access to the iPhone GPS by providing location information in standard GPS NMEA format.
StyleTap Platform for iPhone is the newest member of the StyleTap Platform family, which includes StyleTap Platform for Windows Mobile™ and StyleTap Platform for Symbian OS™. With StyleTap Platform, the same binary executable application can run on more smartphones and PDAs than for any other software runtime, while at the same time native code execution is supported on each device. For developers, this is "write once, profit everywhere."
Interested users and developers can visit www.styletap.com/iphone for instructions on obtaining a free 14-day trial of the iPhone version. StyleTap Platform for iPhone can be purchased for US$49.95.
For more information about StyleTap Platform for iPhone, please visit www.styletap.com and subscribe to the StyleTap news blog.
"Apps that currently run on Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, for example, can be ported over in a matter of days, sources close to the company tell me, and they don’t really suffer any degradation in performance.
That’s a compelling proposition for developers looking for additional distribution channels. And if enough of them take Palm up on it, we may see the current paucity of third-party webOS apps quickly head toward abundance."
"If you’re tempted to raise an eyebrow over that statement, consider this: Since Palm announced the PDK at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, its early access partners–EA, Gameloft, Glu Mobile and Laminar Research–have cranked out close to three dozen games."
“The webOS experience has been smooth and user friendly,” Baudouin Corman, VP of Publishing, Americas, for Gameloft told me. “We’ve been pretty aggressive thus far with the number of games hitting the App Catalog, so it’s safe to say that we plan to continue this momentum for the remainder of the year….We’ve seen strong interest from Pre consumers for the kind of games we are releasing. WebOS is going to bring a lot of value and competition to the mobile space.”

You would think that if any phone was going to be able to tether to the iPad it would be an iPhone. Thankfully people with a Palm Pre, Pre Plus, Pixi Plus will in fact be able to tether their smartphones to the iPad. I use an app called My Tether and as you can see below, both my iPhone 3GS and my 1st generation iPhone (now a glorified iPod touch) can easily tether and allow my iPhone 3GS and 1st generation iPhone to use my Pre's WiFi to connect to the web anywhere. No 3G iPad necessary :)
Nokia had 46.9 percent of the market with about 80.9 million sales, and Research in Motion had 19.9 percent with 34.3 million sales.
Cupertino-based Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) had about 14.4 percent of sales in the total mobile operating system market, Gartner said.
In 2008 Apple had 8.2 percent of the market with about 11.4 million units.
Apple sold a record 8.7 million iPhones in the last quarter alone, a growth rate of 100 percent over the year-ago quarter.
Another big gainer was Mountain View-based Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG). Its Android moved up to 3.9 percent in 2009 from less than a 1 percent share in 2008.
Sunnyvale-based Palm Inc. (NASDAQ:PALM) Web OS had 0.7 percent of the global market with about 1.2 million units sold."

RBC recently conducted a survey of 3,200 people and found that 13% are likely to buy the US$499 iPad. Initial interest in the iPhone was at 9% prior to launch in 2007. Perceived value for the cost is probably the deciding factor. Remember, the original iPhone was also $499. The iPad has obvious differences like size, resolution, a huge existing library of 3rd party apps and 16GB of memory (the $499 iPhone had only 4GB of storage). The iPad is also contract-free, something the iPhone can't (officially) do in the US." Via TUAW .
San Francisco, CA -Toktumi, Inc., the leading provider of affordable phone services for small or home-based businesses, announced that the VoIP-enabled version of its calling app Line2, Version 2.0, has been approved by Apple and is now available on iTunes to new and existing customers.
Peter Sisson, Founder and CEO of Toktumi, said, "Line2 is a landmark application that will appeal to consumers and business people alike. For the first time, you can use your iPhone the same way, with the same number, whether placing or receiving calls over Wi-Fi, 3G, or Cellular Voice networks. If you live or work in a dead cell zone, or just want to reduce your cell bill, you are going to want Line2."
Mr. Sisson adds: "In the wake of the news that Verizon Wireless plans to put a crippled version of Skype on its phones, one that will not work over Wi-Fi, Line2 catapults AT&T to the front of the pack. The Line2 service is a huge win for AT&T's iPhone customers, and demonstrates both Apple's and AT&T's commitment to supporting next generation communications tools. I'm absolutely thrilled at their groundbreaking approval of the VoIP-enabled version of Line2 for iPhone and believe that history has been made today."
Line2's Wi-Fi capabilities allow international travelers to place and receive calls while overseas without incurring voice or data roaming charges. Using Line2, Calls to any number back home will be free, as will calls to other Line2 users, wherever they are worldwide. Calls to international numbers start at $0.02 per minute, whether calling from home or abroad.
Line2 is designed for professionals who can't afford to miss a call. It combines the best elements of Skype and Google Voice, but adds business grade features, reliability, and live customer support. There is no other calling app available on the iPhone or any other mobile device with the flexibility and features offered by Line2. Line2 detects the best available network based on customer preferences and places and receives calls over that network automatically. Advanced VoIP calling features include call waiting, call transfer, and conferences for up to 20 people - all without burning a single cellular minute. Wi-Fi call quality is better than cellular with Line2, and Wi-Fi calls between two Line2 customers use 16-bit HD audio for crystal clear sound quality that is stunning to experience.
Line2 is literally a second line on the iPhone, so that you have two numbers on one phone, each with its own voicemail, caller ID, and contacts. Business people can finally stop carrying around two phones, one for personal calls and one for work. Each Line2 number integrates with Toktumi's hosted PBX platform, providing office phone features like auto-attendant ("Press 1 for..."), call screening, caller-specific call forwarding, after-hours settings, voicemail by email, and PC-based calling, all integrated with the Line2 application. You can get just one line or set up an entire office, with all lines billed to one account and managed centrally.
Line2 is a $0.99 download that comes with 30 days of free service. After that, service costs just $14.95/month for unlimited US/Canada calling and access to all features. Line2 is now available in the App Store.

"AT&T announced today that iPhone users are using too much data on their network in larger cities such as New York and San Francisco. AT&T claims that the high bandwidth usage, brought on by iPhone users, is causing network issues, resulting in dropped calls, slow 3G network and/or problems connecting to the network at all.
AT&T recently launched an iPhone app to help consumers understand how much bandwidth and usage they have been using, in order to cut back on the amount of data they use. Consumers with the unlimited data plan may have to pay a penalty if they use more than 5GB a month soon. AT&T is thinking about making consumers who go over their 5GB allowance to pay a fee, depending on the extra usage."
"Operation Chokehold" is designed to protest and try to take down AT&T's network due to this ridiculous statement from AT&T that they may charge customers who use too much data under their "unlimited iPhone data plan". Isn't unlimited data, unlimited data??
***I don't think iPhone users should try and bring AT&T's network down in protest, but if AT&T is going to make such a ridiculous threat to their bread and butter iPhone customers they might have some repercussions...***

"The source mentioned that this application could also be incorporated into the iPod.app before release," Weintraub reports. "Though it wasn't specified, the app will likely have the same Live Pause functionality that the Nanos currently enjoy."
Weintraub reports, "Apple's iPods and iPhones have been able to receive FM radio signals for some time now [and] this wouldn't be the first time Apple awoke sleeping hardware functionality from its mobile products... For instance, Apple didn't enable Bluetooth in its 2nd generation iPod touch until 9 months after it was released." Via 9to5Mac .
The Pre is the UK’s most anticipated phone, with 26 per cent of mobile users expressing an interest in buying one. This is almost double the 16 per cent who said they would buy the iPhone before its launch in 2007.
The ‘Iphone killer’ handset, due to launch on Friday, will be available on O2 alongside its Apple rival. O2 will be offering the smartphone free to those on a 24-month contract, which it hopes will boost longer contracts in its users.
This is verified by the figures from TNS which show that the 27 per cent of existing O2 customers want a Pre. Of those polled, 32 per cent who are currently on other networks said they'd consider switching to O2 to get it.
Sales of the Palm Pre are expected to outshine those of the Iphone in its first year, despite lower awareness of the handset overall among the general population." Via The Inquirer .

Apple has released iPhone OS 3.1.2. List of improvements are:
*Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not wake from sleep
*Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart
*Fixes bug that could cause occasional crash during video streaming
• As we have noted in previous reports, iPhone and Android continue to gain share at the expense of the legacy platforms like Symbian and Windows Mobile.
• Although its share of usage has been declining, Nokia handsets still dominate the top smartphones lists in all regions outside North America. Nokia’s new touchscreen devices – the N97 and XpressMusic – are both gaining traction and were the number 4 and 5 smartphones in Western Europe.
• Android continues its strong growth in both North America and Europe. Ad requests from Android devices grew 17% month over month in August, following a 50% increase in July. Given the new devices launching in Q4, it could be a huge holiday season for the Android platform.
• Phone represented 50 percent of US smartphone usage in AdMob’s network in August 2009, followed by RIM and Android devices at 14 and 13 percent, respectively.

Revealed by David Pogue in The New York Times, Google's alleged Voice Web application is said to be the "next chapter" in the ongoing dispute between it and Apple.
"Already, Google says it is readying a replacement for the Google Voice app that will offer exactly the same features as the rejected app -- except that it will take the form of a specialized, iPhone-shaped Web page," Pogue writes. "For all intents and purposes, it will behave exactly the same as the app would have; you can even install it as an icon on your Home screen."
He goes on to question: "What is Apple going to do now? Start blocking access to individual Web sites?" Via AppleInsider .

"The nation’s cellphone networks could suffer “potentially catastrophic” cyberattacks by iPhone-wielding hackers at home and abroad if iPhone owners are permitted to legally jailbreak their shiny wireless devices — that’s what Apple claims.
A jailbroken iPhone is a weapon of mass disruption, Apple claims.
The Copyright Office is considering a request by the Electronic Frontier Foundation to legalize the widespread practice of jailbreaking, in which iPhone owners hack their devices to accept software that hasn’t been approved for distribution through the iPhone App Store. Apple made the claim in comments filed last week with the agency.
The company’s filing explained that jailbreaking could allow hackers to altering the iPhone’s BBP — the “baseband processor” software, which enables a connection to cell phone towers.
By tinkering with this code, “a local or international hacker could potentially initiate commands (such as a denial of service attack) that could crash the tower software, rendering the tower entirely inoperable to process calls or transmit data,” Apple wrote the government. “Taking control of the BBP software would be much the equivalent of getting inside the firewall of a corporate computer — to potentially catastrophic result." CUPERTINO, California—July 21, 2009—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2009 third quarter ended June 27, 2009. The Company posted revenue of $8.34 billion and a net quarterly profit of $1.23 billion, or $1.35 per diluted share. Apple sold 2.6 million Macintosh® computers during the quarter, representing a four percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 10.2 million iPods during the quarter, representing a seven percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. Quarterly iPhones sold were 5.2 million, representing 626 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter.

Take this Poll with a grain of salt. According to Electric Pig (UK's fastest growing tech news site) , the numbers from their poll of which of the 3 devices people are looking forward to this summer are in. As you can see from their poll and pie chart the Pre wins in a landslide.
***Note*** "The New iPhone" and "Zune HD" have not been announced.
Technically speaking, PALM has rocketed more than 240% higher in 2009, enjoying near flawless support from its rising 10-week moving average. Furthermore, the equity has not closed a session below its 10-day and 20-day moving averages since March 9. The stock met with a spot of technical resistance near the $12 level on May 7, but the pullback was halted by support at PALM's rising 10-day moving average. Additional support lies just below the shares at the $10.50 level, an area that recently provided short-term resistance. A rebound from this solid support should help propel PALM steadily higher."

Apple saw iPhones sales rise 123% year-on-year to 3.79m units on the back of broader availability worldwide, and this contributed to a leap in net profits by 15% to $1.21bn, from $1.05bn a year earlier. Total revenues were up 9% to $8.16bn from $7.51bn though it is hard to judge how much of that came from iPhones, as Apple reports these on a 'subscription-based' model, spread over the device's lifecycle of 24 months. Analysts estimate about $1.5bn, with a margin (also undisclosed by Apple) that is higher than its other hardware products." Via rethinkwireless.com .

* The annual iPhone launch is “becoming a tradition.”
* Nothing official is being confirmed, but they said that people should prep for an exciting time this summer.
* AT&T is said to be working with Apple to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services.
* Apple’s 3.0 software should tell us where the iPhone platform is going… uh, k?
* They said customers shouldn’t need to choose from AT&T’s high-end devices because of features, they should choose based on preferences. The gap in capability should be filled with the new iPhone. Ok, bets on slide out QWERTY, autofocus camera, video sharing, blah blah?
* Seems like the higher speed HSDPA (7.2Mbps) is being hinted at too which should confirm the earlier rumors of the new Infineon chipset.
The presentation by Greg Joswiak, Apple's VP of product marketing for iPods and iPhones, also detailed that Apple has shipped 800,000,000 apps from iTunes in the first eight months, which is well ahead of the previous pace to reach a billion apps in its first year. The smartphone company once dominated the U.S. smartphone market with its Treo line, but it has steadily been outpaced by Apple's iPhone 3G, and Research In Motion (NSDQ: RIMM)'s BlackBerry line. Palm introduced the WebOS-powered Pre at the Consumer Electronics Show in January to help it mount a comeback.
Mike Abramsky, an analyst with RBC Capital, upgraded Palm to an outperform rating because he said WebOS can bring the company back to a smartphone leadership position.
"Palm is developed end-to-end smartphone software and hardware, providing a superior user experience, which we believe can offer a compelling alternative to iPhone," wrote RBC Capital analyst Mike Abramsky in an investor's note. "Rather than a 'one product Hail Mary,' we see WebOS as a platform, spawning a family of devices addressing a broader market opportunity."
The operating system was built from the ground up with mobile Internet connectivity in mind, and it has an innovative touch-based interface. One compelling feature is called "Synergy," which aggregates information from various Web-based sources into one interface. For example, WebOS can pull data fromMicrosoft (NSDQ: MSFT) Outlook, social networks, and Web-based e-mails into a unified contact list. If a contact updates their phone number on Facebook, the changes would automatically be made to the phone over the air."
It's great to see people are beginning to realize that while Palm has a lot riding on the Pre, the Palm webOS is what is really setting Palm up to be a major player in the smartphone/mobile device arena.

As a follow on to the article that Jimmie posted earlier today about iTunes 8.1 coming soon, I happened to notice today that the Apple Remote application appeared as having been updated. With changes to iTunes in the works, it isn't surprising that Remote would also get an update. Maybe "Coming Soon" means sooner than later. We'll see.

Someone is selling 2 working iPhone prototypes on ebay. Only one iPhone works, they're sold as a pair, and the working iPhone is running iPhone OS 03.06.01_G (iPhone Launch OS 1.0 was version 03.11.02_G). As of this post the bid is @ $2,295.00.

"Your application duplicates the functionality of the built-in iPhone application Mail without providing sufficient differentiation or added functionality, which will lead to user confusion."
The jailbreaking community has actually grown since Apple began allowing 3rd party applications to run on the iPhone OS. Cydia , the installer app that runs on jailbroken iPhones and iPod touch has announced that beginning today Cydia is opening its own App Store where developers will be able to sell and distribute their applications.
This news will definitely anger Apple, but hopefully it'll show them that developers and customers want to be able to create and purchase applications that add functionality not allowed or available due to Apple's choosing.
Copy/Paste is reason enough to jailbreak ;)

"There are very few things that are on the banned list in our household. But iPods and iPhones are two things we don't get for our kids."
Gates does admit to being swayed — a little— by Apple's smartphone, though: "Every now and then I look at my friends and say 'Ooh, I wouldn't mind having that iPhone'."
Shouldn't you always do what's best for your kids? ;)
FYI, the iPhone and iPhone 3G both have 128MB RAM.

"Today, we're offering more people easy access to their information on the go with two-way calendar and contacts sync for iPhones and Windows Mobile devices, and two-way contacts sync for mobile devices that support SyncML. This will be a particularly handy improvement for people who regularly use Google tools, like corporate employees, university students, and busy families.
For iPhone and Windows Mobile devices, Google Sync allows you to get your Gmail contacts and Google Calendar events onto your phone. Sync uses push technology, which means that any changes you make to your calendar or contacts from the browser or phone will be reflected on your device within minutes. For phones that support SyncML, the tool will allow you to get your Gmail contacts onto your phone. For all of these devices, synchronization happens automatically over the air, without having to manually sync your phone. The connection is always on, which means your information is always up-to-date, no matter where you are or what you're doing.
Getting started is easy. You can configure Google Sync directly from your device. The instructions and capabilities vary for different phones, so check out our Help Center for device-specific information. If you're a Google Apps user, Google Sync must be enabled for your domain by your administrator.
Following our credo to launch early and iterate, we're introducing Google Sync in beta. Before you begin, we encourage you to review a few known issues for the iPhone and Windows Mobile devices. Also, please keep in mind that Google Sync will replace all existing contacts and calendar information on your phone, so make sure to back up any important data before you get started. You can find out more information on backing up your data in the Help Center.

AppleInsider is reporting that :
"However, the company has since remained almost entirely silent on the matter. Where early iPhone 2.1 beta firmware included background notifications, the fourth developer test version pulled the feature altogether without any commentary on Apple's part beyond an alleged reply e-mail from CEO Steve Jobs, who stated that company wanted to get background push "100% right the first time." The official 2.1 and 2.2 releases have similarly passed on the feature while adding others.
While no additional evidence has come up to support theories that the delay is being used to implement true background processes, speculation has surfaced that Apple may have to wait until its next major iPhone revision to implement the necessary code. With a 412MHz ARM processor and only 128MB of temporary memory, the first- and second-generation iPhone lines may struggle to support more than one or two background apps before becoming unusable. If the feature requires a new ARM processor or additional memory to be useful, Apple could either restrict the number of third-party background processes on older models or else disable the feature entirely for these devices.
If Palm can do this with the Pre, T-mobile G1, and every Windows Mobile smartphone, the folks in Cupertino need to realize people want to be able to do more with their phones. Why even tell iPhone customers it will be released in an update in September? It's February and Apple still still hasn't ackowledged the delay.
In an interview with Bloomberg at the Davos, Switzerland event, Adobe chief Shantanu Narayen describes development as a complicated two-way process rather than maintaining the previous image of a one-sided effort that would depend on App Store approval before it could launch.
"It’s a hard technical challenge, and that’s part of the reason Apple and Adobe are collaborating," he says. "The ball is in our court. The onus is on us to deliver." Via AppleInsider .
MacRumors has discovered a reference to a new iPhone in the latest 2.2.1 firmware.
"Apple uses these models numbers to distinguish between different hardware models. The original iPhone carries the model number of "iPhone 1,1" while the 3G iPhone is labeled "iPhone 1,2". These numbers do not change for simple storage increases and instead represent functionally different devices."
An ad network is also reporting web hits from an iPhone 2,1.
Phil Schiller, Apple's Vice President of World Product Marketing recently said:
Apple's natural product timelines and acknowledged that June is the usual timeframe for major iPhone revisions, although storage increases could happen at any time.
Apple doesn't list any new features with this update, only bug fixes and improvements.
iPod Sales Set New Record
CUPERTINO, California—January 21, 2009—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2009 first quarter ended December 27, 2008. The Company posted record revenue of $10.17 billion and record net quarterly profit of $1.61 billion, or $1.78 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $9.6 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.58 billion, or $1.76 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 34.7 percent, equal to the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 46 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Adjusting GAAP sales and product costs to eliminate the impact of subscription accounting, the corresponding non-GAAP measures* for the quarter are $11.8 billion of “Adjusted Sales” and $2.3 billion of “Adjusted Net Income.”
Apple sold 2,524,000 Macintosh® computers during the quarter, representing nine percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold a record 22,727,000 iPods during the quarter, representing three percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Quarterly iPhone units sold were 4,363,000, representing 88 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter.
“Even in these economically challenging times, we are incredibly pleased to report our best quarterly revenue and earnings in Apple history—surpassing $10 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time ever,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.
“Our outstanding results generated over $3.6 billion in cash during the quarter,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2009, we expect revenue in the range of about $7.6 billion to $8 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share in the range of about $.90 to $1.00.”

Copy and Paste wasn't a high priority for Apple in the iPhone OS, but it's a feature that many people need in a smartphone. Leave it to the developers creating applications for Jailbroken iPhones to come up with a solution. Clippy allows you to copy and paste through out all of the iPhone stock applications (Safari, Mail, Text, etc.) and some applications from the App Store (I used Zenbe above). Clippy can be found on the Cydia app.
The iPhone's custom auto-correct dictionary (located at /private/var/mobile/Library/Keyboard/dynamic-text.dat for all your jailbreaking, SFTP-ing types) doesn't update itself when you're using, say, Notes. Using Mobile Safari's Google search box, however, seems to instantly refresh the file.
At the same time, Notes and other type-friendly apps will pick up whatever additions you make with Mobile Safari." Via lifehacker .

Under the terms of the deal, song prices will be broken down into three categories--older songs from the catalog, midline songs (newer songs that aren't big hits), and current hits--said one of the sources. Apple has offered songs free of digital rights management protections from EMI for more than a year. But EMI accounts for less than 10 percent of music sold in the U.S.; these new deals will expand iTunes' DRM-free library to include songs from the other three major labels (Sony BMG, Universal, and Warner Music).
Apple and the music labels have also apparently come to terms on over-the-air downloads, according to a source. That would allow iPhone owners to download songs to their mobile devices via cell networks and without the aid of Wi-Fi. Apple, which closed the deals last week, could announce the agreements as early as Tuesday at the Macworld Conference and Expo in San Francisco." Via CNET .

AppleInsider is reporting that a 3rd party case maker has begun selling cases for an iPhone nano. Apple has not released or announced an iPhone nano (yet), but that's not stopping XSKN from making and selling the cases. This is the same site that began selling cases for the iPhone 3G and the 4th generation iPod nano before Apple announced them, so there might be some truth to this rumor.

SAN JOSE, Calif., December 17, 2008 – iambic, Inc., a leading provider of innovative productivity-enhancing software, today unveiled its first iPhone App, SnappySeeker, a super efficient way for users to launch Internet searches with just one tap. This app, formerly known as GoogHelper, has an easy-to-use interface that can accommodate searches in 15 different categories. With the addition of the iPhone, SnappySeeker is now available for popular smartphone devices including the BlackBerry, the Palm Centro/Treo, the T-Mobile G1 running Google Android, and cell phones running Windows Mobile.
“As we expanded the availability of this handy app across more platforms and listened to the feedback from our customers, we realized that the name GoogHelper was a bit too narrowly focused,” said Adriano Chiaretta, COO of iambic, Inc. “The new name, SnappySeeker, is actually more reflective of our business philosophy – to focus on creating apps that can be easily tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual, are intuitive to use, and introduce fun ways to get more done.”
Along with reducing the number of taps it takes to find what you are looking for, SnappySeeker is designed to take advantage of Google Maps as well as the mobile device’s SMS/text messaging capabilities, to send searches to the Google SMS service for immediate results.
In particular, the iPhone version features integrated browsing capabilities and a “touch & scroll” navigation bar which enables users to obtain results across multiple search providers (such as Amazon, Flickr, Technorati, Wikipedia, eBay) in seconds.
Availability and Pricing:
The iPhone version of SnappySeeker can be obtained from Apple’s iPhone App Store at the introductory price of $0.99. It appears in the Productivity category.
SnappySeeker is also available on Palm OS, Windows Mobile (Pocket PC and Smartphone Edition), BlackBerry and the Android platforms. It can be downloaded directly from iambic ( www.iambic.com ) or from partner sites, including Handango, Handmark and Mobihand.
"If you made it through the fine print, you may have noticed that there are now 10,000 applications available for iPhone and the iPod Touch available on the App Store. Nothing new there, either," Goldman reports.
"What is new, and absolutely stunning, is the small print at the bottom of today's ad. Apple now says that iPhone users have 'downloaded over 300 million' applications from the App Store, from games to business programs. Why is that stunning? Consider that on the company's conference call on October 22, Apple disclosed that the following day, Apple expected users to download their 200 millionth app. Which means, as of today, users have downloaded a staggering 100 million apps in just the past 6 weeks," Goldman reports.
"So all that talk of a 'bubble' in apps demand was just that, talk! Experts expected an initial big shot in the arm, and that demand would trail off as the weeks passed by. These figures suggest that the app store is only gaining momentum, and it's another big reason for users to choose iPhone over Research in Motion's BlackBerry," Goldman reports.

Nokia's share of the market for smartphones -- handsets with computer-like features like e-mail -- fell to 38.9 percent in the quarter from 51.4 percent a year before, Canalys said.
However, Apple's market share jumped to 17.3 percent and RIM's to 15.2 percent in the quarter.
"The introduction of the iPhone 3G in July and Apple's expansion into many more countries helped propel the vendor to second place globally," Canalys said in a statement."
AppleInsider is reporting new features seen in the upcoming iPhone 2.2 OS.
"A series of screenshots from Apple's latest iPhone 2.2 beta have leaked on the web, revealing a new interface for downloading podcasts over wireless networks and a more polished version of the handset's App Store application.
Direct Podcast Downloads The screenshots, published by the German-langue blog Flo's Weblog, appear to confirm reports that the next software update for the iPhone will allow users to grab podcasts from the mobile iTunes Store over the handset's 3G connection."
The study, now in its second year, measures business customer satisfaction with wireless smartphones—defined as mobile phones offering advanced capabilities and personal computer-like functionality—such as a BlackBerry or Treo. Overall satisfaction is measured across five key factors. In order of importance, they are: ease of operation (27%); operating system (24%); physical design (21%); handset features (18%); and battery aspects (10%).
Apple ranks highest in overall smartphone customer satisfaction with a score of 778 on a 1,000-point scale, performing particularly well in the ease of operation, physical design and handset feature factors. BlackBerry manufacturer RIM (703) and Samsung (701) follow Apple in the rankings.
“With the introduction of the iPhone in 2007, Apple has clearly differentiated itself from the competition in areas that are most important to business smartphone users,” said Kirk Parsons, senior director of wireless services for J.D. Power and Associates. “By making basic applications and features easy to use and providing functionality in a thin, lightweight device, Apple has performed well in exceeding customer expectations.”

According to a memo to Clear Channel Online Music & Radio staffers from EVP Evan Harrison, the application will add a few new stations every week, and the next version of will "likely" launch this year.
