In-house Radio.app in the works for iPhone and iPod touch
"We've just received a tip that an iPhone radio.app is being developed in-house by Apple for use on the iPhone and iPod touch. From what we know, the app will be allowed to operate in the background like iPod.app and will offer the same functionality as the FM radio in the new iPod nanos," Seth Weintraub reports for 9 to 5 Mac.

"The source mentioned that this application could also be incorporated into the iPod.app before release," Weintraub reports. "Though it wasn't specified, the app will likely have the same Live Pause functionality that the Nanos currently enjoy."

Weintraub reports, "Apple's iPods and iPhones have been able to receive FM radio signals for some time now [and] this wouldn't be the first time Apple awoke sleeping hardware functionality from its mobile products... For instance, Apple didn't enable Bluetooth in its 2nd generation iPod touch until 9 months after it was released." Via 9to5Mac .

  Agendus 1.01 for iPhone released

Agendus is one of those applications that is a favorite on each platform it runs on. I've used it on Palm OS, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, Palm webOS (via Classic), and now iPhone. Agendus 1.01 for iPhone has been released .

The following is a quick rundown of some of the things that make Agendus shine.

» Easy Navigation. Agendus for iPhone takes advantage of the unique page transitions, finger scrolling capabilities and ease of getting where you need to, for which the iPhone is known for.

» Customize to your liking. The preferences panel provides a variety of options allowing to fine-tune the app and its behavior to the user's liking.

» Ready for iPhone OS 3.0. Agendus if fully compatible with iPhone OS 2.2 and above. Additionally, special care has been placed into making sure the app is compatible with the new OS 3.0.

» iPod Touch. The majority of the features in Agendus for iPhone can be used on the iPod Touch, including the Over-the-Air facilities (via WiFi), with the only limitations being placing phone calls and text messaging.

» Multi-Function Today View. Agendus for iPhone consolidates in one view your tasks, along with Real-time Weather Conditions (plus a 9-day forecast), an inspirational Quote of the Day and an informative Day in History snippet, each retrieved and updated with a simple touch over the related slot.

» Customize the Today View. You can rearrange the position of each Today View slot. Also, each slot is collapsible to show/hide the related information. It's also possible to define how many and what type of task to show.

» Contact List. Agendus reads from and writes to the built-in contact related storages of the iPhone, therefore any addition or modification made in Agendus is immediately reflected in the native Contacts App and vice versa.

» Expanded Contact View. In addition to the straightfoward Contact list, Agendus for iPhone features its unique "Expanded" mode, which shows the associated contact photo, as well as all of the phone numbers and emails directly on the list. Tapping on these numbers/emails will dial or start a new email message instantly. » Tasks List. Agendus introduces a missing component on the iPhone: tasks (to-dos) and provides a number of facilities allowing complete task manipulation

Apple changes its tune due to the Palm Pre

Look at this, Apple is now considering allowing applications to run in the background. Why the change of heart? 3 letters, PRE. Apple is beginning to realize that the Palm Pre is the 1st device that is heads above the iPhone. Running backgrounds was always shotdown by Apple due to battery life. Somehow Palm was able to run more than 1 app in the background and it wasn't having that battery drainage Apple keeps spewing. So now, Apple is finally considering letting apps run in the background. Somebody is starting to take the Pre seriously.

Updated Mobile Gmail for iPhone and Android

"Today we're introducing a major revision to Gmail for mobile that takes advantage of the latest browser technology available on iPhone and Android devices. We've updated the user interface, made it faster to open messages, allowed for batch actions (like archiving multiple messages at once), and added some basic offline support

Despite the advent of 3G networks and wifi, smartphones still lack a high-speed, always-on broadband connection and can have connections far less reliable than their desktop brethren. So, just like when we redesigned the Gmail for mobile client app last October, we've gone back to the drawing board and redesigned Gmail for the mobile browser to overcome some of these limitations. We made performance more consistent, regardless of connection type, and laid the foundation for future improvements.

Now, when you go to gmail.com from your iPhone or Android browser, archiving email is quicker because it doesn't require a response from a remote server. Instead, we cache mail on the device itself (using database storage on the iPhone and a device-local mobile Gears database on Android-powered phones). Actions like archiving or starring messages are first applied to this cache and then sent to Gmail servers in the background whenever a network connection is available. You only have to wait for a response from the server when you're requesting an uncached message or list of messages. As a result, you can start-up Gmail even if you're on a slow connection. You can even compose mail and open recently read messages while offline."

Cydia opens App Store for Jailbroken iPhones and iPod touch
It was believed that after Apple opened up the App Store to allow 3rd party applications to run on the iPhone and iPod touch the jailbreaking community was going to go away. The problem was that Apple had complete control over the applications that made it into the App Store, but more importantly what apps didn't. Apple has rejected many apps that compete with any of Apple's own iPhone OS apps. Developers began to receive rejection letters like the one below.

"Your application duplicates the functionality of the built-in iPhone application Mail without providing sufficient differentiation or added functionality, which will lead to user confusion."

The jailbreaking community has actually grown since Apple began allowing 3rd party applications to run on the iPhone OS. Cydia , the installer app that runs on jailbroken iPhones and iPod touch has announced that beginning today Cydia is opening its own App Store where developers will be able to sell and distribute their applications.

This news will definitely anger Apple, but hopefully it'll show them that developers and customers want to be able to create and purchase applications that add functionality not allowed or available due to Apple's choosing.

Copy/Paste is reason enough to jailbreak ;)

Source: Apple asked Google not to use multi-touch in Android, and Google complied
"One of the bigger complaints about T-Mobile’s G1, the first phone based on Google’s Android platform, is that its touch screen doesn’t use multi-touch, the technology which allows for a screen to accept multiple points of contact as simultaneous input. Now we may know why.

Apple, which of course makes the signature multi-touch mobile device, the iPhone, apparently asked Google not to implement it, and Google agreed, an Android team member tells us." Read more @ VentureBeat .

Apple rumored allowing real background apps on iPhone
Apple had promised iPhone and Touch users that an expected update to the iphone OS would bring with it the ability to run more than one application at a time. It was supposed to be made available in September, we're in February and this feature is still nowhere to be found.

AppleInsider is reporting that :

"However, the company has since remained almost entirely silent on the matter. Where early iPhone 2.1 beta firmware included background notifications, the fourth developer test version pulled the feature altogether without any commentary on Apple's part beyond an alleged reply e-mail from CEO Steve Jobs, who stated that company wanted to get background push "100% right the first time." The official 2.1 and 2.2 releases have similarly passed on the feature while adding others.

While no additional evidence has come up to support theories that the delay is being used to implement true background processes, speculation has surfaced that Apple may have to wait until its next major iPhone revision to implement the necessary code. With a 412MHz ARM processor and only 128MB of temporary memory, the first- and second-generation iPhone lines may struggle to support more than one or two background apps before becoming unusable. If the feature requires a new ARM processor or additional memory to be useful, Apple could either restrict the number of third-party background processes on older models or else disable the feature entirely for these devices.

If Palm can do this with the Pre, T-mobile G1, and every Windows Mobile smartphone, the folks in Cupertino need to realize people want to be able to do more with their phones. Why even tell iPhone customers it will be released in an update in September? It's February and Apple still still hasn't ackowledged the delay.

Adobe, Apple working together on Flash for iPhone
"Once thought to be building Flash for the iPhone mostly on its own, Adobe has mentioned at the World Economic Forum that it's not only continuing work on the animation plug-in but has teamed up with Apple to make it a reality.

In an interview with Bloomberg at the Davos, Switzerland event, Adobe chief Shantanu Narayen describes development as a complicated two-way process rather than maintaining the previous image of a one-sided effort that would depend on App Store approval before it could launch.

"It’s a hard technical challenge, and that’s part of the reason Apple and Adobe are collaborating," he says. "The ball is in our court. The onus is on us to deliver." Via AppleInsider .

Safari the Only Sure-Fire Way to Update iPhone's Auto-Correct Database
"The foul-mouthed folks at Ars Technica wondered why their iPhones weren't updating and recognizing their, um, custom verbiage. Turns out there's only one way to make sure an iPhone/iPod touch learns the words you use.

The iPhone's custom auto-correct dictionary (located at /private/var/mobile/Library/Keyboard/dynamic-text.dat for all your jailbreaking, SFTP-ing types) doesn't update itself when you're using, say, Notes. Using Mobile Safari's Google search box, however, seems to instantly refresh the file.

At the same time, Notes and other type-friendly apps will pick up whatever additions you make with Mobile Safari." Via lifehacker .
