iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2nd gen, they will run many things... but there are some things they won't run, like multitasking.
No word on if the original iPhone will be upgradeable to iPhone OS 4.

The Palm Pixi is to the Palm Pre what the Centro was to the Treo. You get the same great full webOS experience on a thinner, less expensive (sorta, kinda), smaller form factor smartphone. I'm finding the Pixi to be a much more solid device in terms of physicality compared to the Palm Pre. I'm a fan of the QWERTY candybar style that Palm made iconic with the Treo. There's nothing like having a real physical keyboard present at all times.
The Pixi is actually thinner, shorter, and less wide than both the Palm Pre and the iPhone 3GS (it's crazy how small and thin it is). Of course there are some compromises to having those attributes, most notably the screen size. While the Pixi's screen is smaller than the Pre and iPhone 3GS, I really don't find it to be a deal breaker at all. I use a Pre and iPhone 3GS daily and easily adjusted to the smaller screen. I'm also digging the keyboard on the Pixi over the Pre's keyboard and the iPhone 3GS' virtual keyboard.
In my opinion the Palm Pixi definitely holds its own when compared to the Palm Pre and the iPhone 3GS in many respects. Like the Palm Pre it has 8GB of internal storage vs the iPhone 3GS'16GB and 32GB. All three smartphones include access to Sprint and AT&T's 3G network. The Pixi and Pre have consistently beaten AT&T's 3G speeds in my testing and hasn't dropped any calls compared to the iPhone 3GS.
I was seriously considering switching to the Palm Pixi from my Palm Pre, but the clincher for me is the Pixi's lack of WiFi. Palm made a huge mistake by not including WiFi with the Sprint Palm Pixi. Palm won't be making that mistake again since it's all but confirmed that Verizon's Palm Pixi (expected to launch sometime next month) will include built-in WiFi. If the lack of WiFi isn't an issue for you, you're a Sprint customers, want a thin, small, smartphone, with tons of storage, and one of the best mobile operating systems around check out the Palm Pixi. You won't be disappointed.

"AT&T announced today that iPhone users are using too much data on their network in larger cities such as New York and San Francisco. AT&T claims that the high bandwidth usage, brought on by iPhone users, is causing network issues, resulting in dropped calls, slow 3G network and/or problems connecting to the network at all.
AT&T recently launched an iPhone app to help consumers understand how much bandwidth and usage they have been using, in order to cut back on the amount of data they use. Consumers with the unlimited data plan may have to pay a penalty if they use more than 5GB a month soon. AT&T is thinking about making consumers who go over their 5GB allowance to pay a fee, depending on the extra usage."
"Operation Chokehold" is designed to protest and try to take down AT&T's network due to this ridiculous statement from AT&T that they may charge customers who use too much data under their "unlimited iPhone data plan". Isn't unlimited data, unlimited data??
***I don't think iPhone users should try and bring AT&T's network down in protest, but if AT&T is going to make such a ridiculous threat to their bread and butter iPhone customers they might have some repercussions...***

Apple and Palm's flagship phones moved up the list from last quarter (iPhone 3GS #2, Palm Pre #7). The real surprise is who's not on the list. Windows Mobile for the 1st time doesn't have a single smartphone in the U.S. rankings.

The latest report by Gartner reveals that Windows Mobile had a market share of just around 7.9 percent in the third quarter of the year." Via Silobreaker .

"Of course, it's Apple Inc.'s iPhone, now in its third iteration, the iPhone 3GS, released on June 19. More and more, I'm convinced that this tiny, still-less-than-5-ounce, color-screened marvel is just that, a marvelous creation. In many ways, it could (and does) replace even a lightweight notebook computer for many daily tasks, putting computing in a whole different sphere," Kellner writes. "You could say the iPhone is, more than any of its current competitors, a Swiss Army knife of mobile devices."
Kellner writes, "Nothing else I've seen so far marries so many functions in so small a package. Nothing else I've seen is easier to use or has as wide a range of accessories and peripherals, let alone so many applications that can be added easily. In short, the iPhone has changed the way many of us look at computing, and that may happen only once or twice in a lifetime and certainly not more than once in a decade."

We know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We’ve been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches – and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.
We know that iPhone users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone’s multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end.
We’re riding the leading edge of smartphone growth that’s resulted in an explosion of traffic over the AT&T network. Wireless use on our network has grown an average of 350 percent year-over-year for the past two years, and is projected to continue at a rapid pace in 2009 and beyond. The volume of smartphone data traffic the AT&T network is handling is unmatched in the wireless industry. We want you to know that we’re working relentlessly to innovate and invest in our network to anticipate this growth in usage and to stay ahead of the anticipated growth in data demand, new devices and applications for years to come.
We thank you for your business and look forward to keeping you updated on our initiatives.

Apple has released iPhone 3.0.1 update to fix an sms vulnerability. Apple said:
"We appreciate the information provided to us about SMS vulnerabilities which affect several mobile phone platforms. This morning, less than 24 hours after a demonstration of this exploit, we've issued a free software update that eliminates the vulnerability from the iPhone. Contrary to what's been reported, no one has been able to take control of the iPhone to gain access to personal information using this exploit." Via Engadget .

But Apple is telling developers that it won't make them publicly available on the App Store until September.
Augmented reality is a mesmerizing software breed that overlays useful info onto a real-world view using the iPhone's camera. On the one hand, the iPhone has helped lure coveted subscribers from competitors such as Verizon Wireless, boosting AT&T's total wireless subscriber base. But on the other hand, the hefty subsidy that AT&T pays each time an iPhone is sold is eating into the company's profits.
The launch of the latest iPhone 3GS on June 19 was the biggest boost yet AT&T got from its iPhone deal. The company, which reported second quarter earnings on Thursday, said it activated more than 2.4 million iPhones during the quarter. Roughly a third of these activations were for new AT&T subscribers.
In total the company added 1.4 million net subscribers during the quarter, including 1.2 million customers with monthly post-paid plans. Analysts had expected the company to add about 1.08 million new subscribers, according to Reuters.
Despite the boost from iPhone sales, AT&T's profits dipped compared to last year. The company reported a profit of $3.2 billion, which is down from $3.77 billion during the same quarter a year ago. The company also reported that its revenue fell slightly to $30.73 billion from $30.87 billion. Analysts had expected revenue of about $30.64 billion, according to Reuters."

"Our checks indicated BlackBerry sales declined in June at AT&T and Sprint due to increasing smartphone competition, as BlackBerry sales appeared to lose share to the Palm Pre at Sprint and the new 3GS iPhone and older $99 iPhone at AT&T. BlackBerry sales at T-Mobile remained solid, but Verizon sales were slightly weaker following the termination of the buy one, get one promotion.
In addition, Walkey says that the Pre is snagging sales from the Curve at Sprint. At AT&T the new iPhone 3GS and older 3G at $99 are squeezing BlackBerry units." Via ZDNET .

"Apple has admitted that its latest iPhone 3GS model can overheat but has blamed the problem on sunshine rather than a glitch with its design.
"Technology sites and Apple forums have been inundated with comments about the new model overheating and becoming discoloured since it was launched on June 19. Some iPhone users have complained that the device has become too hot to hold to the ear during long calls while others have noticed that the white 32GB model has turned pink after overheating.
In a warning posted on one of the California computer maker's support knowledge base sites, Apple says that users should not leave their phones in a car where temperatures can exceed the -20C to 45C range that the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS models were designed to function in." Via The Telegraph .

I'm sure you've seen many benchmarks comparing the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 3G, Palm Pre, and any other significant contender. I've had the iPhone 3GS since Friday and can tell you it's VERY fast. After having an iPhone 3G for almost a year (upgraded from 1st generation iPhone), the iPhone 3GS feels like Apple has released a device that runs their mobile version of OS X the same way it's big brother runs on Macs, FAST! The speed is noticeable, especially when compared to an iPhone 3G or 1st generation iPhone running iPhone OS 3.0. I no longer need to reset my iPhone 3GS to play certain games, no more tapping an application and getting a few seconds lag before it finally opens. It's how the Apple experience should be.
I also have a Palm Pre and can honestly say that the Pre keeps up with the iPhone 3GS, and blows away the iPhone 3G in terms of speed. Props to Palm for doing what they did with a 1.0 release, the Pre is amazing in its own right (but that's not what this article is about, right? :)).
Check out this video to really see that the iPhone 3GS is FAST, and at times 4 times faster than the iPhone 3G (4 times faster????). In my opinion this video and my experience with the iPhone 3GS gives Apple the right to add the S to the iPhone 3GS and not be gimmicky. The S is definitely for SPEED!*!*!

The new iPhone 3GS is the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet, packed with incredible new features including improved speed and performance -- up to twice as fast as iPhone 3G -- with longer battery life, a high-quality 3 megapixel autofocus camera, easy to use video recording and hands free voice control. iPhone 3GS includes the new iPhone OS 3.0, the world's most advanced mobile operating system with over 100 new features such as Cut, Copy and Paste, MMS*, Spotlight(TM) Search, landscape keyboard and more. iPhone 3GS customers get access to more than 50,000 applications from Apple's revolutionary App Store, the largest application store in the world where customers have already downloaded over one billion apps. iPhone 3GS offers twice the capacity for the same price with a 16GB model for just $199 and a new 32GB model for just $299.** And iPhone 3G is available at the breakthrough price of just $99 for the 8GB model -- a huge milestone for the high end smartphone market.

I pre-ordered a black iPhone 3GS 32GB from the Apple Store and picked it up after work today. I was surprised that there were 2 lines when I got to the store around 5pm, one for pre-orders and one for customers who didn't pre-order. I gave my name to the Apple employee who was checking off names of people who pre-ordered, waited about 5 minutes in line, and was taken into the store. The Apple employee handling my purchase told me that they had sold out of 32GB black iPhone 3GS' at around 2pm, but anyone who pre-ordered an iPhone 3GS was put on hold in the back of the store. The activation process was quick and painless. The whole process from beginning to end took about 20 minutes (much better than waiting in line for 6 hours back in the day;) ) Stay tuned for some 1st impressions and thoughts on the iPhone 3GS.

"You can still buy last year’s model, the iPhone 3G, for $100. But find a way to afford the new one. It looks identical to last year’s iPhone, but its faster circuitry makes a huge difference. (The S stands for speed, says Apple.) If you’re used to the old iPhone, the speed boost hits you between the eyes, especially when you’re opening programs, playing games and loading Web pages,"

An Update for our Customers
Some customers have had questions about our plans and policies for iPhone 3G S, and we’d like to provide you with answers. We’d also like to announce a change to the date when some iPhone customers are eligible for our best upgrade pricing to iPhone 3G S.
PRICING
Importantly, we want our customers to better understand our wireless device upgrade program. Like most U.S. carriers, we offer a variety of phones that we sell below our actual cost when customers agree to sign service agreements. In general, the more a customer spends with us, the quicker they become eligible for a price break on a new device. For example, iPhone customers who spend more than $99 a month per line with us generally are eligible for an upgrade between 12 and 18 months into their contract.
We also currently offer early upgrade pricing only for iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G.
All of that said, we’ve been listening to our customers. And since many of our iPhone 3G customers are early adopters and literally weeks shy of being upgrade eligible due to iPhone 3G S launching 11 months after iPhone 3G, we’re extending the window of upgrade eligibility for a limited time.
We’re now pleased to offer our iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August or September 2009 our best upgrade pricing, beginning Thursday, June 18.
If you’re one of the many customers who will benefit from this change, please note that our upgrade eligibility tools will reflect this change on Thursday, June 18.
We invite you to come to our stores beginning Friday during normal store hours, although please be aware that customer demand may exceed supply in some of our stores. You may also preorder online on June 18 at www.att.com/iPhone, and your iPhone 3G S will arrive in 7 — 14 days. Or you can purchase iPhone 3G S at Apple’s retail and online stores, as well as at other popular retailers.
If you’re one of the customers who benefits from this change, and you’ve already preordered from an AT&T store, we’ll adjust the price of the device when you pick it up. If you benefit from the change and you pre-ordered from AT&T online, we’ll send you an e-mail and issue you a credit.
If you pre-ordered an iPhone 3G S through Apple’s online store, your upgrade eligibility will be reassessed based on AT&T's new upgrade policy for iPhone 3G owners. If you are eligible for the lower price, Apple will issue you a credit for the difference as applicable.

AT&T is not giving current iPhone 3G owners a break on upgrading to the iPhone 3GS like they did when iPhone 1st generation customers upgraded to the iPhone 3G.

You'd think they'd have looked at how many people went from a first-gen iPhone to a 3G and realized those same people would want a 3G S, but apparently not.
* On top of that insult, AT&T isn't supporting all of iPhone OS 3.0's features out the gate: MMS is coming "later this summer," and tethering has been promised but there's no timeline and no pricing information." Thanks, AT&T. Via Engadget .
