iPhone Dev Team unlocks Apple’s iPhone 3G
"A band of independent programmers says it has 'unlocked' the latest generation of Apple Inc.'s iPhones so the devices can be used on unauthorized wireless networks, in a move that could threaten Apple's carrier partners," Yukari Iwatani Kane reports for The Wall Street Journal.

"A group called the iPhone Dev Team released a free piece of software called 'yellowsn0w' that unlocks the iPhone 3G. The software lets users reprogram the phones so they can work on any wireless network based on the same technical standard," Kane reports.

"An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment on the iPhone Dev Team's work, only saying that Apple doesn't support unlocked iPhones in the U.S. Apple offers such phones in Germany and Hong Kong "where government regulation requires it" but they usually come at a steep price," Kane reports. "Software programmers have been trying to unlock the iPhone 3G since it came out last July." Via MacDailyNews .

iPhone 2.0 Jailbroken before official release
The iPhone Dev Team has already been able to Jailbreak Apple's iPhone firmware from the SDK. They're calling this the "Pwned Project".

"The beta firmware that comes with the iPhone SDK has been modified to unlock and jailbreak the iPhone, even before its public release. Part of the Pwned Project, the hacked firmware will allow you to do anything you want, including the installation of both official and unofficial apps, and even patches. We got the exclusive details directly from the DevTeam, including the fact that it is going to be extremely hard for Cupertino to close this new hole:

pwned firmware means it's custom [firmware], you can have it install anything you would ever want :-) Pwned works with some magic, it will be hard to close but nothing is impossible (from Apple) with a mindtwist. But first, we will enjoy :)" Via Gizmodo .

Regret taking the iPhone firmware 1.1.3 plunge? Want to go back to 1.1.2 with phone functionality easily?
iPhone 1.1.3 firmware was the biggest and featue rich update so far. I've never upgraded my iPhone until the iPhone development community figured out a way to Jailbreak Apple's latest firware.

Seeing the jiggling icons, Home screen web-clippings, Google Maps Locate Me feature, etc. (semi-GPS functionality) made me bite the bullet and upgrade to 1.1.3

1.1.3 land was pretty nice, cool features, nice jiggly icons, but for the most part it didn't come close to the great applications I would find on the installer App daily. I missed being part of the iPhone "hacking" community. My 1.1.3 was just another iPhone only being used to the potential Apple deemed fit.

iPhone firmware 1.1.3 is much different from previous firmware upgrades. You can no longer just put your iPhone into recovery mode and select an older version of the firmware in order to get back to having a Jailbroken iPhone. Besides restoring your iPhone you also need to downgrade your Baseband in order to have an iPhone that can make telephone calls (with out doing this, you end up with an iPod touch).

I knew there had to be some way for me to get back to iPhone firmware 1.1.2, even though most people said it's impossible. Luckily a pesron by the name of "Sidetalker" has written up a step by step 1.1.3 Downgrading Tutorial over @ modmyifone . He's done an amazing job of making it a relativley easy task. Huge props to him. I am now back to firmware 1.1.2 after almost a week of using 1.1.3.

Sometimes life isn't always greener of the other side, or firmware in this case ;)

True push email comes to iPhone
One of, if not the best feature of the BlackBerry is its push email. Once an email comes into your inbox you are notified of it, no need to setup a specified time for your device to check for new email. Out of the box an iPhone will check mail at specified times of every 15 minutes, 30 minutes, and every hour, as well as manually checking for mail. Push-email has now made its way to iPhone in an app called iMapIdle .

iMapIdle is an iPhone application that simulates "Push Email" with your IMAP server. It's in its early stages but the current features are:

- listens in the background waiting for new IMAP mail even if you are in sleep/standby mode

- notifies you via a popup and/or sound. You choose how to be notified. Sound notification should use the same method your mail client uses (ie: if you have vibrate on, it'll vibrate as well)

- popup notification allows you to choose whether the mail client should check for email right there. NOTE: Don't choose this if you are in the mail client as it will exit (you've been warned). The popup will disappear after 20 seconds and if you miss it the iMapIdle icon will show you how many popup notifications you have missed

- supports SSL connections and special support for GMail IMAP

INdependence provides a better way to modify your iPhone

iNdependence is a Cocoa-based application for Mac OS X which provides an easy-to-use interface for modifying your iPhone.

iNdependence is a Cocoa-based application for Mac OS X which provides an easy-to-use interface for jailbreak, activation, SSH installation, and ringtone/wallpaper/application installation on your iPhone. It's open source under the GNU v2 license.

The source code for interacting with the iPhone has been broken out into a library (libPhoneInteraction) so that it can be easily reused by other applications.

I tried out INdependence because I had to restore my iPhone over the weekend, and wanted to wait for an easier way to get the job done. INdependence is a great step in the right direction to make it easier to get 3rd party apps back on your iPhone if you're using firmware 1.1.1

iPhone 1.1.1 Jailbreak was a success

I'm happy to report that I was able to successfully Jailbreak my iPhone using The iPhone Dev Team's iPhone 1.1.1 Jailbreak . The current process is definitely not user friendly (you have to use Terminal and commands), and took me some time to successfully get it running. If you're feeling lucky go for it, if not I'm sure there will be an easier way to achieve this based on past experience.

Apple: Do not unlock iPhones; many unlocking programs cause irreparable iPhone software damage
Apple today released the following statement:

Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed. Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update, containing many new features including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, later this week.

Apple strongly discourages users from installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones. Users who make unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty. The permanent inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not covered under the iPhone's warranty.

iPod Touch Runs Same Applications as iPhone
Gizmodo is reporting that the iPod touch runs the same version of OS X that the iPhone runs. The iPod touch doesn't ship with the mail, google maps, stock, or weather applications found on the iPhone. Don't fret too much, hackers will get the binaries of the iPhone's apps and transfer them to the iPod touch. There should be no problem running these applications on the iPod touch.

iPhone unlocking Steve Jobs’ master plan?
"To say that Apple has too much to lose in allowing iPhones to be hacked [unlocked from AT&T] is a severe misconception," Don Reisinger blogs for CNET.

"The rationale for that viewpoint seems to make sense: Apple is getting a cut of every service plan, and with millions of users, the revenue benefits are nothing to scoff at. But what it loses sight of is Apple's real intention," Reisinger writes.

Steve Jobs "knew that by making the iPhone exclusive, he was losing out on a significant market of people both home and abroad and his vision for the future of Apple included those that were left out. But alas, the exclusivity deal wasn't that hard to swallow. He, like all of us, knew that people would immediately start to hack the iPhone and unlock it for use on T-Mobile and other services abroad. And once that happened, the benefits could far outweigh the costs of such a hack," Reisinger writes.

"Apple can't stop anyone from unlocking a cell phone, and to be honest, I don't think it really cares," Reisinger writes. "Apple is playing this recent iPhone unlocking news perfectly. If it overreacted and stopped the hack, it could stymie its future revenue gains, but if it endorses such a maneuver, it effectively leaves AT&T out to dry. Isn't it ironic that AT&T lawyers went knocking on the doors of the hackers while Apple lawyers sipped tea at home?" Via MacDailyNews .

Teen trades unlocked Apple iPhone for new car

"The teenage hacker who managed to unlock the iPhone so that it can be used with cellular networks other than AT&T will be trading his reworked gadget for a new car.

George Hotz, of Glen Rock, N.J., said he had reached the deal with CertiCell, a Louisville, Ky.-based mobile phone repair company.

Hotz posted on his blog that he traded his modified iPhone for "a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones."

"This has been a great end to a great summer," Hotz wrote.

The 17-year-old Hotz said he will be sending the three new iPhones to the three online collaborators who helped him divorce Apple Inc's popular product from AT&T's network. The job took 500 hours, or about 8 hours a day since the iPhone's June 29 launch.

Hotz made the deal with Terry Daidone, co-founder of CertiCell, who also promised the teen a paid consulting job.

"We do not have any plans on the table right now to commercialize Mr. Hotz' discovery," Daidone said in a statement." Via Yahoo News .

SwapTunes syncs your iPhone with more than one computer

SwapTunes is a very cool program that allows you to sync your iPhone with more than one computer.

"This simple app lets you sync your iPhone music/videos with more than one computer by keeping two iTunes libraries on the iPhone and allowing you to quickly swap between them whenever you like.

The reason I wrote this is because I have different videos and music on both my home PC and my work PC. Unfortunately, iTunes does not allow you to sync music/videos to more than one computer. So, until there is software like Floola, Poddox or Sharepod for the iPhone, I created this simple solution.

From now on, every time you run the SwapTunes app, it will switch to your other library, effectively allowing you to have two complete iTunes libraries on your iPhone and effortlessly swap between them. It will even keep any bookmarks you had on a video or audiobook before the swap and resume playing from where you left off." Find more information here .

This application is GREAT. I was able to get all of the music I wanted from my work pc to my iPhone. It's great being able to just tap the SwapTunes icon on my iPhone and have both my home and work pc's iTunes library.

New Jersey teen unlocks Apple iPhone, uses on T-Mobile network
"A teenager in New Jersey has broken the lock that ties Apple's iPhone to AT&T's wireless network, freeing the most hyped cell phone ever for use on the networks of other carriers, including overseas ones," The Associated Press reports.

"The New Jersey teen collaborated online with four other people to develop the unlocking process," AP reports.

"George Hotz, 17, confirmed Friday that he had unlocked an iPhone and was using it on T-Mobile's network, the only major U.S. carrier apart from San Antonio-based AT&T that is compatible with the iPhone's cellular technology," AP reports.

"The hack, which Hotz posted Thursday to his blog, is complicated and requires skill with both soldering and software. It takes about two hours to perform," AP reports. Via MacDailyNews .

How to EASILY install 3rd party apps on your iPhone
If you're like me and happy with your iPhone, but just wish it had more applications on it, you're not alone. Installing applications on the iPhone has been frustrating for the common person since you had to hack it and know linux commands, etc. to do so.

Gizmodo has posted EASY instructions on how to add 3rd party apps for the common person. I actually followed their instructions on my lunch break (it was a risky move;)), and now have a bunch of cool applications on my iPhone. I have the NES emulator with a bunch of games, a version of Finder for the iPhone, an application called Money for expenses, a few different games. I have to give Gizmodo major props for posting such easy instructions, it couldn't be simpler.

  Palm HotSync Manager 7.0

TreoCental.com forum member ahsirg has been hacking the new Palm Desktop 6.2 for Windows Vista beta installer and has repackaged the new HotSync Manager, version 7.0. According to ahsirg, the new version of HotSync Manager 7.0 works with Palm Desktop version 4.2 that comes bundled with the Palm TX.

This is in no way a supported release of the Palm HotSync Manager 7.0 by Palm, so use it at your own risk. Still, if you are one of those people who absolutely just can't wait to have the latest software for your Palm, you can get all the details in this TreoCentral discussion thread.

iPhoneInterface starts to crack open iPhone
"It looks like hacking the iPhone took a huge step forward last night. iPhone enthusiasts over at the #iphone-talk and #iphone-mac channels on irc.osx86.hu have developed iPhoneInterface, a new Windows and Mac tool that allows you to manipulate the iPhone's state, launch services, and interact with the iPhone filesystem. With it, you'll be able to scan the iPhone file structure, create and remove folders, start iPhone services, and more. It's still in its early days so don't expect too much from this first release. A public subversion server should be up overnight. Pop over to the irc channel for more information." Via TUAW .

Yet another (sorta) celebrity's cell phone gets hacked
It's not Paris Hilton, or Lindsay Lohan this time. Lindsay just had it done for the second time last week , poor girl. This time it's American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino. Looks like Fantasia likes using her SideKick 3 for more than just making phone calls, im'ing, and texting. She likes to take pictures of herself in various poses wearing panties and a top. Unlike other celebrities, Fantasia is more demure with her cell phone self portraits (possibly a tad smarter?) by keeping her panties on while posing for her SideKick 3.   Lindsay Lohan's BlackBerry gets hacked again, along with her Myspace

"Time will tell if this is legit or not, but for now Oh No They Didn’t is reporting that a hacker has broken into Lindsay Lohan personal Blackberry, Gmail, and MySpace account, having gained access to loads of personal pictures and e-mail correspondence. Among the items already available are some MySpace photos, as featured here, and Myspace e-mails from such celebrities as the ubiquitous Paris Hilton, Shanna Moakler, and DJ Samantha Ronson, who’s dubiously rumored to be Lindsay Lohan’s big lesbian hookup."

Meanwhile Lohan’s hacker is promising to open up a website in the next 3-4 days; hawking their items for a profit no doubt. So will we get to see anything as interesting as Lindsey Lohan topless? We all know she’s far too modest for something like that.

Either way, this sure feels like a retread of last summer, when it was suspected that Paris Hilton herself hacked into Lohan’s BlackBerry and was leaving harassing messages on friend’s voice mail. While Lindsey Lohan’s publicist eventually acquitted Paris of the charge, it was not before admitting that Paris was the initial suspect; and accusations are again surfacing that Paris’ camp is behind this current hack."
