Jeff Hawkins Talks About the Foleo

Palm founder, Jeff Hawkins, spent some time talking about the Foleo with Patrick Seitz of Investor's Business Daily.

The Q&A with Hawkins was originally published as a sidebar to a larger article discussing the growing popularity of the "netbook", a small form factor notebook computer designed to ultra portable providing easy access to the web, email, and writing. Palm chose to cancel the Foleo in September of 2007 to focus on rewriting the aging Palm OS mobile operating systems that powers many of the company's most popular smartphones, including the consumer-oriented Centro.

The following is an excerpt from the Investor's Business Daily interview with Mr. Hawkins:

"IBD: Why didn't Palm have the confidence in Foleo to go forward?

Hawkins: I don't think that Palm didn't have confidence in it. Palm has its issues and challenges. At the time, they were in the process of closing this major financing, restructuring deal with Elevation Partners.

And as part of that deal, they brought in Jon Rubenstein, who's a great guy. He was at Apple (AAPL) and did all the iPod stuff. He came in basically to take over product stuff, because I really hadn't been running the product design center at Palm for several years. They came in with a particular strategy that they wanted to pursue at Palm, and that strategy didn't have room for Foleo.

It was clear Foleo had technical issues. It was a first-generation product. We'd have to launch it and then do another gen within a year. And that's a big commitment of people and dollars.

It was a strategic decision to pursue a different approach. I don't think they made a mistake. We haven't seen the outcome of that decision yet. It really was not acrimonious at all. It was just business.

I'm a little disappointed, only because I loved the product concept. I'd really like to own one. And I'm a believer in it. And I'd love to end my design career at Palm with a success there.

They may still come back to it. They haven't totally written it off.

IBD: So you didn't get to keep a Foleo?

Hawkins: Oh, I have one. Oh, yeah, I got to keep one. I have the beta release. The hardware is very reliable. It works great."

You can read the full Hawkins Q&A here. As many of my long time readers know, I was one of the few people who did get to play with a pre-production Foleo. It really was a great idea. At the end of the day, I didn't care that it wasn't running a Linux varient or Microsoft's Windows XP. I wanted a light-weight device that looked great and offered long battery life with easy access to the web, email, and an office suite. (DataViz provided a Foleo specific version of their award-winning Documents To Go application.) However, the Foleo, as originally designed, was not a stand along computer. It needed to be tethered to a Palm OS or Windows Mobile smartphone and, as discussed in the article, the Wind River Linux operating system and core applications were not ready to go live. I'm looking forward to 2009 when Pam OS II/Nova smartphones are shipping because if Palm does decided to do a new Foleo, the Nova opertaing system will likely be the foundation for such a device.

Palm realized the Foleo wasn't a good ingredient for the Treo
"Rock bottom for Palm and Hawkins?" is an interesting article over @ CNET looking at Palm's announcement to cancel the Foleo.

"It's hard to dump too much on Hawkins. The man invented the Palm Pilot and the Treo. I once invented a novel method of stacking beer cans in a fridge (the key is not to buy any food). But after Hawkins unveiled the Foleo at the D: All Things Digital conference--arguably the most prestigious gathering of the computing elite--with proclamations like "it's the best idea I've ever had" and "the most exciting product I have ever worked on"--Palm's decision to cancel it without even a product launch must be mortifying for Hawkins."

"But what is Palm going to do? Speaking of mortifying, Ed Colligan must be wondering why he gave Hawkins $10 million to go down into the basement and come up with Palm's Next Big Thing, only to emerge with the Foleo. Almost universally panned by analysts and bloggers, the Foleo was a lightweight Linux "mobile companion" that was designed to read e-mail, but didn't work with corporate e-mail software from RIM or Motorola, among a multitude of other sins."

"While it's embarrassing, Colligan made the right decision. You've got to know when to fold them, and the Foleo wasn't going to beat anything better than a pair of sixes."

Palm clearly knew that it risked its reputation of being a "Mobile Computing Leader" if it had released a half baked device like the Foleo. While it may be embarrassing right now, Palm is better off in the long run that they decided not to release a device that couldn't live up to expectations, especially their own.

I'm a huge Palm OS supporter, but never thought the Foleo made sense. Palm's Treo is still considered one of, if not the best smartphone available (I'm also an iPhone owner, but find I still love my Treo). Palm needs to re-focus their energy on improving and strengthening their strong Treo brand, and I'm glad they've decided to do just that and cancel the Foleo. I never understood why I would want an accessory as large as the Foleo for my Treo, and it seems Palm finally realized the same thing. Two many cooks spoil the broth, the same can be said about "Mobile Companions" and smartphones.

  Palm cancels the Foleo
I just received this email from Palm regarding the Foleo being canceled.

Hi Jimmie,

I wanted to make you aware that Palm's CEO Ed Colligan has just made a post to the Palm blog announcing that the company has decided to cancel the Foleo mobile companion in its current configuration. The full text of the blog is:

"As many of you are aware, we are in the process of building our next generation software platform. We are very excited about how this is coming together. It has a modern, flexible UI, instant performance, and an incredibly simple and elegant development environment. We are working hard on this platform and on the first smartphones that will take advantage of it.

In the course of the past several months, it has become clear that the right path for Palm is to offer a single, consistent user experience around this new platform design and a single focus for our platform development efforts. To that end, and after careful deliberation, I have decided to cancel the Foleo mobile companion product in its current configuration and focus all our energies on delivering our next generation platform and the first smartphones that will bring this platform to market. We will, of course, continue to deliver products in partnership with Microsoft on the Windows Mobile platform, but from our internal platform development perspective, we will focus on only one.

Because we were nearly at the point of shipping Foleo, this was a very tough decision. Yet I am convinced this is the right thing to do. Foleo is based on a second platform and a separate development environment, and we need to focus our efforts on one platform. Our own evaluation and early market feedback were telling us that we still have a number of improvements to make Foleo a world-class product, and we can not afford to make those improvements on a platform that is not central to our core focus. That would not be right for our customers or for our developer community.

Jeff Hawkins and I still believe that the market category defined by Foleo has enormous potential. When we do Foleo II it will be based on our new platform, and we think it will deliver on the promise of this new category. We're not going to speculate now on timing for a next Foleo, we just know we need to get our core platform and smartphones done first."

You can link directly to the Palm blog and read more at: http://blog.palm.com/palm/2007/09/a-message-to-pa.html

This is pretty surprising to say the least. The Foleo was expected to ship some time this month, and was basically finished and even had retail packaging according to some sources. The Foleo was never really embraced the way Palm tried to portray it. Jeff Hawkins described it as being more ground breaking than the Palm Pilot, or the Treo (the world obviously thought otherwise, and Palm finally conceded). I'll give Palm some props for finally realizing that it shouldn't release this device, as their "bread and butter" Treo didn't need such a huge accessory.

  Palm Makes More Foleo Announcements
Earlier today, at the LinuxWorld conference, Palm has announced two more strategic partnerships to further extend the capabilities of the Foleo Mobile Companion.

First, Palm has announced a partnership with Linux provider Wind River Systems to deliver an open standards Linux platform for the Foleo. Wind River will also provide the Palm development community with Wind River Workbench, a software development suite for Wind River's Linux platform.

(Long time listeners of the 1SRC podcast know that this partnership has been rumored for years now.)

Additionally, Palm announced a partnership with LogMeIn, Inc to provide a secure remote access service to personal and corporate computers.

More details about Palm's partnership with Wind River can be found on the Palm website. For additional information about the LogMeIn service, please visit the LogMeIn website.

  Pocket Tunes for the Foleo™
It looks like Palm is definitely getting the support of developers to make applications for the upcoming Foleo, just like they did with the Palm OS. Normsoft has announced that they will be brining Pocket Tunes to the Foleo. Pocket Tunes is the default music player Palm uses on Palm OS Treos and PDA's.

Foleo Fanatics Hands On Foleo Review
Palm hosted four Foleo Sneak Peek events last week. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the Manhattan event held at the Rockefeller Center retail store in New York City. What follows are my first impressions of my hands on time with Palm’s latest product offering.

Palm has positioned the Foleo to be an accessory to your mobile phone. When it is launched later this summer, the Foleo will ship with support for the company’s Treo smartphones; however, Palm has expressed interest in expanding support to other mobile phones. (Foleo Fanatics will cover third-party phone support when it is announced. The remainder of this article will deal specifically with the Treo.)

Who and Why

The Foleo is aimed squarely at mobile professionals and executives who spend a lot of time reading and composing email and working with email attachments. When paired with a Treo, email and attachments (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Acrobat, and images) are displayed on a crisp 10-inch display. Typing up a longer email is easy with Foleo’s full-sized keyboard. For this first Mobile Companion product, the Palm designers have decided to stay focused on the core customer and the applications that are used. When developing the Foleo the designers looked at what applications worked best with a large screen. Email and document editing came to the forefront. The PIM applications work equally as well on the Treo’s screen or the Foleo’s screen and would have less of an impact on the customer experience. Palm is working with their solution partners to ensure Foleo customers will have additional applications to use with the Treo and the Foleo when the product does launch.

Avvenu Bringing Remote File Access to the Palm Foleo
Brighthand is reporting that Avvenu will be bringing remote file access to the Palm Foleo.

"Avvenu has just announced a version of its Access 'n Share service for the Palm Foleo. This will allow users to remotely access digital content stored on their work or home PCs with the upcoming mobile companion.

Already available for Palm's smartphones, this new version of Access 'n Share was developed to take advantage of Foleo's large screen size and wireless capabilities.

Users will be able to securely browse a remote PC's files and folders, preview photos, download and upload documents, and share files with others.

Access 'n Share also provides an optional personal digital locker that allows users to securely store and synchronize files from their PCs to an Avvenu server, providing remote access even when their PCs are turned off or not connected to the Internet.

"Palm Foleo is a great way to display and edit documents and information available on a Palm Treo smartphone," said Richard French, chief executive officer for Avvenu. "Avvenu Access 'n Share completes the proposition by allowing Foleo users to remotely access and share files stored on their work or home personal computers, whenever they are connected to the Internet."

MotionApps and Palm Announce mDayscape Personal Information Manager for Foleo Mobile Companion
MotionApps Provides Calendar, Contacts and Tasks Application for New Generation of Mobile Device

SAN FRANCISCO & SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jun 18, 2007 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- MotionApps and Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) today announced that mDayscape Personal Information Manager will be available for the new Palm(R) Foleo(TM) mobile companion. mDayscape lets customers manage calendar, contacts and tasks on the Foleo and synchronizes with a Treo smartphone to access personal information on the go.

The Palm Foleo mobile companion is for people who understand that sometimes less is more. With the press of one button, the mobile companion's large screen displays wireless e-mail from a paired smartphone. A smartphone is great for finding quick bits of information or sending a brief response to an e-mail. But there are times when a full-size keyboard and a big screen is preferred to view attachments, type longer emails, or to get a bigger-screen look at web pages and photos. Plus, Internet access is available anywhere there is cell phone coverage, or when the Foleo is within range of a Wi-Fi hotspot.(1) With Foleo's instant on/off capability, light and small size, and 5-hour battery life, Palm expects the mobile companion to establish a new category of personal-computing products.

MotionApps' mDayscape is a Personal Information Manager developed natively and exclusively for the Foleo mobile companion. The application is simple and easy to use with Foleo's rich user interface. mDayscape includes contacts, calendar and tasks, three powerful applications tightly integrated with each other, the Palm Foleo and the Treo smartphone.

"Bringing a contacts, calendar and tasks application to the Foleo further increases usability of the Treo and enhances the user experience in a continued shift away from the desktop and toward a smartphone as a center of computing," said Voja Lalich, chief executive officer of MotionApps. "All of us at MotionApps are very excited to announce the launch of mDayscape on Palm's first mobile companion product."

Finally... The Foleo will be getting the much needed PIM applications that were missing when Palm announced it. The Foleo is starting to look a little better.

Answers to Common Questions on the Palm Foleo
"Palm, Inc. took the wraps off the Foleo Mobile Companion a few days ago, but many people still have questions about this upcoming device.

Much of this is a result of the fact that Palm is keeping mum on many of the details on the Foleo. The timing of Wednesday's announcement seems to have been more about taking advantage of all the publicity around the All Things Digital conference, rather than because Palm is close to releasing this new product.

Still, some additional information on the Foleo has emerged since the announcement." Read more @ Brighthand .

Foleo: The best idea Jeff Hawkins ever had
CNET has a very interesting article, The best idea Jeff Hawkins ever had .

The Foleo has been getting mixed reviews and it hasn't even been released, but Jeff Hawkins thinks it's the best idea he's had.

"I actually think it's going to be the biggest one of all. One of the things you try to do in product design is build what we call category-defining products. You build the first one and then it becomes iconic. That's really hard to do. We clearly did that with the Pilot, marginally less so with the Treo because there were other products, RIM and so on.

This is a whole new category. I think it's the best idea I've ever had. The further out you are, the more people have trouble understanding. It's hard to go back in time, but when we did the Pilot, there were a lot of people that thought that was a stupid idea. I mean a lot.

I'm very confident about (the Foleo). It's a challenging product to design. It's a great idea that's got a huge amount of legs to it. So this, I believe, will be the third one. At Palm, we had the Pilot--the PDA business--and we have the smart-phone business. (Foleo) is going to be the third one. Maybe there will be a fourth one someday, I don't know.

This is the third leg of the business. This is in its infancy. It's going to take a few years for the product to grow to anything of substantial size. But, you know, we didn't sell a lot of Pilots the first year. We didn't sell a lot of Treos the first year.

This (the Foleo), in some ways, is a lot more like the PDA business in the sense that when we did the Pilot, we designed whatever product we wanted to design. We distributed anywhere we wanted to distribute it. We priced it the way we wanted to price it and we branded it the way we wanted to brand it. When we did the Treos, that's not true any more. We have constraints on every single one of those items. It's hard. The carriers dictate things so much. The great thing about this product (is that) it's like we're back completely in control again. We have complete control of the operating system. We have complete control over the software suite. I love that. I've been wanting to get back completely in control again."

I have mixed feelings about the Foleo but I trust Jeff Hawkins. This guy created the Palm Pilot and the Treo, if he's even more excited about the Foleo then all I can say is Mazeltov!

If you're going to give me a Super Sized Treo, give me a Super Sized Treo
I'm a Palm fanboy, and not ashamed to admit it, I've owned countless Palm PDA's and Treos. I currently own 3 Treos, (755p, 700p, 700wx) a Tungsten T2, and a M515 PDA. I love their products, and their operating system. So I was very happy that I got asked to attend the Foleo Webcast yesterday. I couldn't wait to feast my eyes on this top-secret device. There wasn't even one picture leaked of this device, a first for Palm. The Foleo also includes another important first for Palm, it is their first non-touch screen device. Could smaller, thinner, non-touch screen Treos be far behind? Ok, back to the Foleo.

One of the first things Jeff Hawkins said in the webcast was that Palm wants to make smartphones smaller and smaller. I know millions of Treo users want the same thing. Hopefully Palm is working on those smaller smartphones. What we got today was a device somewhere in between a watered down laptop and an even more watered down Palm OS device.

Jeff made it very clear that the Foleo is not intended to be a laptop replacement. It's a "mobile companion."

Looks can be deceiving. The Foleo has got a 10" screen, a full size laptop keyboard, 118MB of RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, a USB slot, a SD card slot, a compact flash slot to add even more memory, video out for presentations, built in solid state flash memory (although the amount was not disclosed), under 2lbs. in weight, and runs Palm's Linux Operating System. We were told that the Foleo site would be updated with more specs.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, it's definitely no laptop:)

I watched the Foleo get paired up with a Treo, like all things Palm it was super simple. The Foleo syncs all of your email from your Treo to it, and your Foleo does the same to your Treo. They mirror each other. They are companions, as Jeff kept calling them. The companions just don't do enough in my opinion.

Sure it's nice that the Foleo comes with an email client, Documents to Go, Opera web browser, a photo viewing application, a file manager, and a terminal app for accessing the Linux command line (I don't know how many people are going to use this).

The Foleo does not come with the great PIM's that Palm OS users swear by. There's no calendar, memos, or tasks. I also didn't see any type of audio or video player. Why leave out such crucial and basic applications??? On the Foleo website Palm says, "use its big screen and keyboard to type longer emails and see more of attachments."

I'd like to see my calendar on that big screen, as well as my tasks, and memos. I'd like to watch video I take of my niece and nephew with my Treo and watch it on the Foleo, doesn't look like I can do that. I just can't comprehend how basic media applications, let alone the classic Palm PIM's are not included with the Foleo.

I seriously hope that Palm will at least include the PIM's they are famous for when the Foleo ships.

If you're going to try and give me a Super Sized Treo, give me a Super Sized Treo. My Treo doesn't need a companion, especially one the size and lack of features the Foleo offers.

TreoCentral Hands-on and first impression video of Foleo

TreoCentral has posted the, TreoCentral Hands-On first impressions of the Palm Foleo video. Dieter Bohn seems pretty impressed with the Foleo, make sure you check out the video.

Dieter also confirms that "we can say with confidence that it has 256 megs of RAM built-in, 128 of which is dedicated to the OS and its operation. 256 seems awfully small, despite repeated claims by every Palm rep I spoke with that they "never" have had to add more memory themselves. If I get one of these, I'll be adding some CF card expansion, thanks."

Palm's Ed Colligan: Foleo is the Wii of portable computing

"We've seen Jeff Hawkins' -- the synaptic guns behind the Palm Pilot, Handspring, and Treo -- take on the ill-received Foleo. Now we've got the thoughts from his boss, Ed Colligan, CEO of Palm, Inc. As you'd expect, Ed totes the party line with the "mobile companion" spin. He even compares it to the PS3 vs. Wii battle, citing "technology overload" as the mysterious (and massively oversimplified) force that will drive people to Palm's new platform as it has the Wii. Ed also tells us that Palm will be providing the tools to developers after which he expects, "very quickly, there'll be thousands of applications" for the Linux-based Foleo." Via Engadget . Engadget also has a video of the comments.

Foleo is not a laptop replacement

Jeff Hawkins made it perfectly clear that Palm is not trying to make the Foleo a laptop replacement. It is meant to be a companion to your smartphone. He said people want to see more of their webpages than their Treos can show, and also want to see more email. Jeff Hawkins said if you're not into email, the Foleo is not for you (kinda surprised he'd say that). It sure looks like it's trying to be a laptop replacement to me.
