With all the news about Windows Mobile 6.5 today I wanted to see if there was a way I could get it up and running on my ancient T-Mobile Dash. My T-Mobile Dash has gone through so many OS upgrades I wasn't sure it would work. The T-Mobile Dash originally came with Windows Mobile 5 for smartphone. I then upgraded it to Windows Mobile 6. I then upgraded it to Windows Mobile 6.1. Much to my surprise I was able to upgrade it to Windows Mobile 6.5. It's pretty amazing that the Dash could successfully go through so many OS upgrades.

Don't ya just love breathing new life into old devices and making them new again? The T-Mobile Dash has to be one of the best, most upgradeable smartphones on the market. My Dash has gone from Windows Mobile 5, to Windows Mobile 6, and now it's successfully running Microsoft's latest and greatest smartphone operating system, Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard.

The Today Screen has been updated making it much easier to view and get to the most important information on your device. Threaded SMS is finally built in to Windows Mobile, a feature only found standard on Palm Treo Smartphones running Windows Mobile. The audio player has a very "iPod-esque" user interface.

Internet Explorer now allows you to zoom in and out of web pages. Microsoft also finally added Copy/Paste to Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard (better late than never).

Microsoft has also included the ever popular Windows Task Manager in Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard, allowing you to close applications and processes if your device gets a bit sluggish.
Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard also has a full Microsoft Office Suite built in. You can create and edit files right from your smartphone.

Doing this upgrade will definitely void your warranty with T-Mobile (this is a HTC ROM), but if you're like me and like to have the latest and greatest, Windows Mobile 6.1 is a very nice update.
***Update*** Another thing is you can go back to the Official T-Mobile Windows Mobile 6 by downloading it from T-Mobile. I've already tried this out, You can find more information here .

According to The Boy Genius , Virtual BlackBerry will make its debut on the T-Mobile Dash. He will be providing updates as he gets them. The T-Mobile Dash seems to be the Windows Mobile smartphone getting the most action this year, it was also the first smartphone to be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6. Nice job T-Mobile!

I just wanted to post some comparison pictures of the iPhone and other smartphones. I don't have exact specifications, but these pictures should give you an idea on how the iPhone stacks up to other smartphones in terms of size. It's very thin;)
T-Mobile has posted the Official Windows Mobile 6 upgrade for current Dash owners. Get it here .

There are some new applications that were not available in the beta version I was running. An application called Music Plug-In allows you to add a music player plug-in to your home screen. So no need to go through your Start Menu to open up your media player, you can now do it from the home screen, very nice!!!

Another nice application is an updated Set Up E-mail program. As you can see T-mobile has made it VERY easy to setup your various email clients.

Office Mobile is also included, allowing you to edit Microsoft Office Documents.
The final build of Windows Mobile 6 Standard shown below.

The upgrade was quick and painless, it took about 10 minutes to complete. I'm very impressed at some of the extras T-Mobile included in their Windows Mobile 6 Standard upgrade. Very nice!!

Iambic has released Agendus for Windows Mobile Smartphone Edition . I'm happy to report that it works very well on a Smartphone (non-touchscreen phone) like the T-Mobile Dash, Motorola Q, and Samsung BlackJack. I'm running it on my T-Mobile Dash with Windows Mobile 6 Standard installed and all is well (so it'll obviously work when Windows Mobile 6 is released). I'm glad I finally have my favorite PIM application on my Dash. You can try out a Demo of Agendus for Windows Mobile Smartphone here .Labels: dash, software, windows mobile
I successfully updated my T-Mobile Dash to a beta build of Windows Mobile 6. Current Dash owners are going to be VERY happy with the speed increase in terms of the GUI. I haven't played around with it too much yet. Stay tuned.
***DISCLAIMER***
This is an incomplete version of Windows Mobile 6 Beta for the T-Mobile Dash, it's Beta software not meant for release to the public. The official upgrade will be happening very soon I am told. I'm not encouraging anyone to even attempt to install a Beta build of WM6 on your Dash. You could damage your phone, you void your warranty, and can brick you phone making it completely useless (be patient). I just wanted to show you that T-Mobile deserves props for providing a way to upgrade to Windows Mobile 6, while other carriers and phone makers are not giving their customers this option, even though it's clear devices can be upgraded. I've got to say Microsoft and T-Mobile did one helluva job turning the awesome Dash into an even more awesome Dash with Windows Mobile 6. Be patient, T-Mobile will be releasing it VERY soon!
