Apple said “Yes”, and iPhone users around the world said, “Yes, please”. Opera Mini was downloaded more than one million times in its first day of availability in each market. Opera Mini is currently the number one iPhone app in the 22 featured Apple App Stores on their site, as of 8 a.m. CET today.
According to Apple’s download count, Opera Mini has been added to 1,023,380 Apple devices. Opera Mini is the world’s most popular browser that brings the Web to nearly any mobile phone. Opera submitted its browser to Apple on March 23, following the unveiling of Opera on iPhone during the Mobile World Congress, CTIA and SXSW. Initial previews of the browser garnered rave reviews, indicating that Opera Mini delivers up to six times the speed, especially on congested networks, and significant Web-page compression to keep roaming and pay-per-MB costs at a minimum.
“Today iPhone users have a choice, and, as the numbers show, they are eager to explore new and faster ways to surf the Web on the iPhone - especially during heavy Web traffic,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “With any widely available and frequently downloaded Opera product, we are appreciative of all the feedback we are getting, as it helps us to continually improve our product and better meet the needs of our users.”
This should send a clear message to Apple that blocking apps that, "duplicate functionality that could potentially replace such functionality and potentially create user confusion" doesn't confuse users.

Opera Mini App approved for the App Store

Opera today announced its popular mobile browser, Opera Mini has been approved for iPhone and iPod touch on the App Store. Opera Mini will be available as a free download within 24 hours, depending on market.
Opera Mini, with more than 50 million users worldwide, enables fast mobile Web browsing by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the device, resulting in significantly improved page loading. Users of the app will notice an uptake in speed, especially on slower networks such as the 2G Edge network. Surfing the Web with the Opera Mini App on iPhone and iPod touch will also help users save money because of its data compression capabilities. This will hold especially true while the user is incurring roaming charges.
"We are delighted to offer iPhone and iPod touch users a great browsing experience with the Opera Mini App," said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “This app is another step toward Opera's goal of bringing the Web to more people in more places."
Browsing the iPad App Store: A Video [By @viticci] from Federico Viticci on Vimeo.
This is probably going to be a long week for anyone who pre-ordered an iPad. iPad hysteria is full effect. The kind people over @ 9TO5Mac have been kind enough to post a video showing what the iPad version of the App Store is going to look like.
As you can see by the video, these apps aren't the iPhone/iPod touch apps double pixelated. They are specifically apps created for the iPad and they look amazing. Apple has also added "Coverflow" browsing to the App Store on the iPad.
"HD" apps have started to appear in the App Store. The "HD" moniker is supposed to make it easy for people to find iPad specific apps. One of my favorite games, Plants vs Zombies has gotten the "HD" version. Expect more and more "HD" apps popping up ahead of next Saturday's iPad release.
iPad will begin shipping soon and your opportunity to be part of the grand opening of the iPad App Store starts today. Submit your iPad app now for an initial review by the App Review Team and receive feedback on its readiness for the grand opening.

•Build and test your iPad app using iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 5 available on the iPhone Dev Center. Only iPad apps built with iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 5 will be accepted for this initial review.
•Upload your distribution signed app through iTunes Connect by Saturday, March 27, 5pm PDT.
•The App Review Team will review your app on iPad and email you details about the readiness of your app.

•Only apps submitted for the initial review will be considered for the grand opening of the iPad App Store.
iPhone and iPod touch owners: If you haven’t had the chance to check it out, go to the iTunes App Store and download our cool new Touch Mouse app. It turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a wireless trackpad and keyboard for your computer, so you can point, click, scroll and type from afar, in any application, on a Mac or PC.
It works over Wi-Fi, so you can use it anywhere in your house and is a great way to control your computer when it’s connected to your TV and you’re lounging on the couch. And to make typing easier, text is displayed on the screen of your iPhone or iPod touch as you type, so you can see what you’re doing without having to continually look up and down.
And the best part is, the app is free!

Download Touch Mouse in two-steps: 1) Get the Touch Mouse App for your iPhone or iPod touch from the App Store 2) Download Touch Mouse Server software and install it on your computer.
You’ll find instructions when you download the Touch Mouse Server software on Logitech.com. Once you’re up and running, Touch Mouse will allow you to take advantage of the following features:

One feature that stands out is live video streaming. Now anyone with this app can watch the President’s public events at the White House, frequent web chats with Administration officials, and other events like key speeches and press briefings in real time.
In fact, the President’s State of the Union speech next week is a great example. In addition to the millions of Americans watching through TV and websites like WhiteHouse.gov/live, iPhone users on the go will be able to tune in through their phones.
The White House App also lets users stay up to date with the White House Blog and the latest from the Briefing Room. Browse behind-the-scenes photos and watch on-demand videos. The app provides instant access to full videos from recent speeches, press briefings, and special events.
* The White House App is available for free download from the iTunes App Store
This is just the first step for WhiteHouse.gov’s mobile platform.

The game uses the compass and accelerometer (works on 3GS only) for a realistic augmented reality effect. The animated mosquitoes are projected in the real world, which you see through the camera lens. Mosquitoes is available now in the App Store .

Revealed by David Pogue in The New York Times, Google's alleged Voice Web application is said to be the "next chapter" in the ongoing dispute between it and Apple.
"Already, Google says it is readying a replacement for the Google Voice app that will offer exactly the same features as the rejected app -- except that it will take the form of a specialized, iPhone-shaped Web page," Pogue writes. "For all intents and purposes, it will behave exactly the same as the app would have; you can even install it as an icon on your Home screen."
He goes on to question: "What is Apple going to do now? Start blocking access to individual Web sites?" Via AppleInsider .
Apple is taking a lot of heat for the rejecting Google's Voice Application , so much so that long time Apple fanboy David Pogue, Tech Columnist from The New York Times is beginning to bash them.
"In letters sent late Friday to the two companies and AT&T Inc., the FCC asked why Apple rejected the Google Voice application for the iPhone and removed related applications from its App Store. The letter also seeks information on how AT&T, the exclusive U.S. iPhone carrier, was consulted in the decision, if at all," Johnson and Schatz report. "The FCC's letter to Google asks for a description of the Google Voice application and whether Apple has approved any other Google applications for its store."
Johnson and Schatz report, "Google Voice assigns a single phone number to a user's cellphone, land line or Internet phone accounts. It also allows free text messaging and inexpensive international calls."
"On Tuesday, Google said Apple wouldn't let it distribute the software through its App Store, where iPhone users can download software. Apple has previously turned away Internet-telephony programs because they repeated key iPhone functions," Johnson and Schatz report.
Johnson and Schatz report, "In a statement Friday, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said the FCC 'has a mission to foster a competitive wireless marketplace, protect and empower consumers, and promote innovation and investment.' The inquiry isn't a formal investigation, but it is notable because the FCC hadn't received a complaint about Apple's rejection of Google Voice." Via MacDailyNews .
iPhone 3GS Augmented Reality from Chris Hughes on Vimeo.
"IPhone owners are excited to get their hands on the augmented reality applications that we wrote about last week, such as the one for finding nearby subways or for tracking down Twitter neighbors.
But Apple is telling developers that it won't make them publicly available on the App Store until September.
Augmented reality is a mesmerizing software breed that overlays useful info onto a real-world view using the iPhone's camera. Because it relies heavily on the compass -- in addition to other smart-phone features such as the GPS and Internet connection -- only users of the new iPhone 3GS will be able to install them." Just go to the iTunes Store, browse the App Store, and download your best app yet.
The presentation by Greg Joswiak, Apple's VP of product marketing for iPods and iPhones, also detailed that Apple has shipped 800,000,000 apps from iTunes in the first eight months, which is well ahead of the previous pace to reach a billion apps in its first year. In comparison, it took Apple two years to reach its first billion song downloads." Via AppleInsider .

"Your application duplicates the functionality of the built-in iPhone application Mail without providing sufficient differentiation or added functionality, which will lead to user confusion."
The jailbreaking community has actually grown since Apple began allowing 3rd party applications to run on the iPhone OS. Cydia , the installer app that runs on jailbroken iPhones and iPod touch has announced that beginning today Cydia is opening its own App Store where developers will be able to sell and distribute their applications.
This news will definitely anger Apple, but hopefully it'll show them that developers and customers want to be able to create and purchase applications that add functionality not allowed or available due to Apple's choosing.
Copy/Paste is reason enough to jailbreak ;)

SAN JOSE, Calif., December 17, 2008 – iambic, Inc., a leading provider of innovative productivity-enhancing software, today unveiled its first iPhone App, SnappySeeker, a super efficient way for users to launch Internet searches with just one tap. This app, formerly known as GoogHelper, has an easy-to-use interface that can accommodate searches in 15 different categories. With the addition of the iPhone, SnappySeeker is now available for popular smartphone devices including the BlackBerry, the Palm Centro/Treo, the T-Mobile G1 running Google Android, and cell phones running Windows Mobile.
“As we expanded the availability of this handy app across more platforms and listened to the feedback from our customers, we realized that the name GoogHelper was a bit too narrowly focused,” said Adriano Chiaretta, COO of iambic, Inc. “The new name, SnappySeeker, is actually more reflective of our business philosophy – to focus on creating apps that can be easily tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual, are intuitive to use, and introduce fun ways to get more done.”
Along with reducing the number of taps it takes to find what you are looking for, SnappySeeker is designed to take advantage of Google Maps as well as the mobile device’s SMS/text messaging capabilities, to send searches to the Google SMS service for immediate results.
In particular, the iPhone version features integrated browsing capabilities and a “touch & scroll” navigation bar which enables users to obtain results across multiple search providers (such as Amazon, Flickr, Technorati, Wikipedia, eBay) in seconds.
Availability and Pricing:
The iPhone version of SnappySeeker can be obtained from Apple’s iPhone App Store at the introductory price of $0.99. It appears in the Productivity category.
SnappySeeker is also available on Palm OS, Windows Mobile (Pocket PC and Smartphone Edition), BlackBerry and the Android platforms. It can be downloaded directly from iambic ( www.iambic.com ) or from partner sites, including Handango, Handmark and Mobihand.
"If you made it through the fine print, you may have noticed that there are now 10,000 applications available for iPhone and the iPod Touch available on the App Store. Nothing new there, either," Goldman reports.
"What is new, and absolutely stunning, is the small print at the bottom of today's ad. Apple now says that iPhone users have 'downloaded over 300 million' applications from the App Store, from games to business programs. Why is that stunning? Consider that on the company's conference call on October 22, Apple disclosed that the following day, Apple expected users to download their 200 millionth app. Which means, as of today, users have downloaded a staggering 100 million apps in just the past 6 weeks," Goldman reports.
"So all that talk of a 'bubble' in apps demand was just that, talk! Experts expected an initial big shot in the arm, and that demand would trail off as the weeks passed by. These figures suggest that the app store is only gaining momentum, and it's another big reason for users to choose iPhone over Research in Motion's BlackBerry," Goldman reports.
If you have already installed the Google Mobile App on your iPhone you'll need to remove it from your iPhone and in iTunes, re-download the app and you'll get the new features.
Gizmodo is reporting that Google has released Google Earth for iPhone. It's free and available in the App Store now.
Here's the iTunes link for Google Earth .
The app is launching with 10 terrestrial stations, including Top 40s WHTZ/New York and KIIS/Los Angeles, Sports KFAN/Minneapolis, News/Talk KTRH/Houston, and Alternative WWDC/Washington. Internet stations erockster and Pride Radio are also available.
According to a memo to Clear Channel Online Music & Radio staffers from EVP Evan Harrison, the application will add a few new stations every week, and the next version of will "likely" launch this year.
The app is named after Clear Channel's beta music site at www.iheartradio.com, which offers station streams, videos, and other music and info features.
"Barack Obama's campaign recently launched a new Apple iPhone [and iPod touch] application," Ed Hornick reports for CNN.

• The "Call Friends" tab allows users to use their electronic phonebook to call contacts

“iPhone’s unique capabilities, easy SDK and the ability to reach an audience of millions via the App Store made this an easy development choice for us,” said John Pollard, Jott CEO. “To date, we’ve had hundreds of thousands of downloads of Jott for iPhone, which has been a major win for our company.”
“Because I already had a full-time job I used the iPhone SDK to create Trisim in my spare time and in my wildest dreams I never expected this kind of result,” said Steve Demeter, founder of Demiforce. “Selling over 27,000 downloads in the first three weeks means I now have a significant new income stream and some exciting career choices that I didn’t have a couple of months ago.”
“As an 18 year old iPhone Developer Program member I won an Apple WWDC student scholarship and used the opportunity to complete my app over the summer,” said Bryan Henry, developer of Equivalence. “It was a lot of fun to pull it together and certainly the most lucrative summer job I’ve ever had as I made over $8,000 in my first month of App Store sales.”
“Our new account registrations on the App Store are 300 percent better than all our other registration avenues combined,” said Chris MacAskill, SmugMug’s co-founder. “We’ve been able to do things with our iPhone app that we just couldn’t have dreamed of doing on any other mobile platform, so these are revolutionary times for us and for iPhone and iPod touch users.”
"For the last few weeks, I've been staying up late glued to my screen, and frankly it has been wreaking havoc on my sleep patterns. No, not watching the Olympics or the nonstop political gabfest on 24/7 news channels.

As of Friday, 8 Aug, there were 1,647 applications officially available for the iPhone. Many downloads are free, but the first month saw $30m in paid-for software sales. The store is having a wider impact on download pricing too. When the store opened in early July the popular market price for a program was $9.99. In the month following the prices have dropped so far that many are now 99 cents, and even popular games are now debuting at this price." Via The Register .
This application is awesome! SimplifyMedia is offering the application for free to the first 100,000 downloads, and then will be $3.99 afterwards. I'd recommend getting this app while you can because there's a good chance Apple is going to pull it from the App Store.
Fit 2 Vote™ for iPhone and iPod touch - just 99¢ on the iTunes App store. Obama – McCain and Presidential politics, absolutely. You think you know who they are? We discovered we did not, at least not until we put together these quotes and developed this game... We are a group of undecided, independent voters who want to figure who these guys really are. We used the one trail they left behind at every stop, every speech... their words. This is a game of their words.
Challenge yourself. You need to get 50 correct answers to declare yourself – "Fit 2 Vote". If you want keep playing and rack up your personal points, or if you want to reset the score and pass it over to your best friend who thinks they know Obama or McCain, let 'em prove it... In the month since Apple opened an online software clearinghouse called the App Store, users have downloaded more than 60 million programs for the iPhone, Chief Executive Steve Jobs said in an interview at Apple's headquarters. While most of those applications were free, Apple sold an average of $1 million a day in applications for a total of about $30 million in sales over the month, Mr. Jobs said." Apple has pulled another application from the App Store without any explanation. Although I wonder how it ever made it on to the App Store when other applications are still waiting for approval by Apple. Apple gave the green light to an application that was being sold for $999.99, it displayed the screen below.
The description of the "I am Rich" application from the App Store is below.
"The red icon on your iPhone or iPod Touch always reminds you (and others when you show it to them) that you were able to afford this. It's a work of art with no hidden function at all."
If you purchased "I am Rich", there's also a bridge for sale you might want to buy;)
"We've finally gotten in contact with Apple. Looks like the lack of communication was due to automated e-mail systems being employed on both ends, which resulted in e-mails being lost in transit. We're working with Apple to get NetShare back up on the App Store." Via MacDailyNews .
AT&T won't be happy if Apple puts NetShare back into the App Store. The application will bypass AT&T charging iPhone users to tether their iPhone to their computer using the iPhone 3G's high-speed connection.
Many people know Tyler Faux for his many amazing Palm OS applications that he's created over the years. Tyler has started developing applications for the iPhone OS, and his 1st application GoContact can now be purchased in the App Store for $1.99. I purchased GoContact and have used it a few times already, it's one of those applications that should be on the iPhone out of the box.
After first making Nullriver's NetShare application for iPhone and iPhone 3G available via their App Store, and then pulling it, and then selling it again, Apple has once again pulled the app from public sale. It comes up in iTunes Store search, but generates a "currently not available" message when clicked." Via MacDailyNews .
I purchased NetShare after I read about the app being pulled from the App Store and then being added back. I was surprised that the application even made it into the App Store especially because AT&T does NOT offer a tethering plan for the iPhone 3G. AT&T offers a tethering plan for many of its phones and charges customers a monthly fee for the service. It looks like AT&T might have pressured Apple into removing the App. AT&T would rather charge customers a monthly fee to use the iPhone's 3G network to share its internet connection with a computer instead of Apple selling a $9.99 application that allows customers to do this with no monthly fee.
I tethered my MacBook Air to my iPhone 3G using NetShare and can confirm it works. If NetShare somehow makes it back into the App Store (it's been added and removed twice) buy it, it beats paying AT&T a monthly fee.
"That’s roughly double the number that were available when the store opened just over two weeks ago (on July 11, the same day the iPhone 3G went on sale)... Roughly 20% of the apps are free; 90% cost $10 or less. Most also work on the iPod touch," Elmer-Dewitt reports.
"Many consider this flood of software to be a bigger deal than the phone itself. Among smartphones, only the RIM Blackberry has created a comparable platform for so-called third-party programs, but because the Blackberry lacks a touch screen and accelerometer, its apps don’t compare with the iPhone’s in terms of features and ease of use," Elmer-Dewitt reports." The App Store reminds me of back in the day Palm applications. It seemed like every day I checked Palmgear there were more applications to install on my Palm Vx. It's all about the apps..
I was just browsing the applications that are available in the App Store and all I can say is WOW!!! The quality and quantity of applications on day 1 is simply amazing. I was actually surprised that there were so many FREE applications. If you're familiar with iTunes (at this point who isn't?), you'll feel right at home in the AppStore. As part of the iPhone 2.0 software you'll be able to access the App Store right from your device using the iPhone 3G's network, and the iPhone and iPod touch's WiFi connection (no need to connect to a computer). If you don't have an iPhone or iPod touch I can almost guarantee you'll want one after looking through the App Store.
"Apple's highly anticipated iPhone App Store launched earlier this morning, spawning a user-generated list of the most popular applications available at no cost. This article previews the top 10 with links, descriptions, and screenshots."
NEW YORK – July 10, 2008 – AOL today announced three new iPhone OS applications: AIM, the leading instant messaging service; AOL Radio, the most popular online radio service and recent recipient of an Apple Design Award; and Truveo, the leading video search engine are available as free downloads from the Apple App Store beginning today.
“With AIM, AOL Radio and Truveo for the iPhone, consumers now have access to the world’s largest instant messaging network, over 350 streaming radio stations and millions of online videos,” said Kevin Conroy, Executive Vice President of AOL. “Over the past twelve months, AOL has revitalized its Mac development efforts and we’re thrilled to be bringing our world-class communications and multi-media experiences to iPhone users around the world via the App Store.”
The new AIM, AOL Radio and Truveo applications for the iPhone were built using Apple’s iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) and provide users a rich, full-featured experience, with added features unique to the iPhone.
* AIM for iPhone brings together all of the core features of AIM – such as real-time communication, the Buddy List window and the ability to see when friends and contacts are online and available to chat – and combines them with a host of new capabilities that make IM’ing from the iPhone easy and convenient, whether over a Wi-Fi, EDGE, or 3G network.
AIM has been designed from the ground up to take advantage of the iPhone’s unique user interface and advanced capabilities. New features developed specifically for the iPhone include the use of Gestures, which allows users to simply tap to start a new message or to swipe a finger to switch between conversations; Favorites, which puts the buddies with whom you keep in touch at your fingertips; and the ability to easily incorporate a photo taken with the iPhone's built in camera as a Buddy Icon. AIM for iPhone will be available to users worldwide.
* AOL Radio for iPhone gives users in the U.S. immediate, free access to more than 350 best-in-breed stations including more than 150 local CBS RADIO stations and custom channels and more than 200 AOL Radio stations spanning 25 musical genres. AOL Radio for iPhone leverages the iPhone’s Core Location framework to detect a user's location and automatically displays CBS RADIO stations nearest to the user. Additionally, AOL Radio for iPhone automatically adapts to the current connection speed of the device providing low-bandwidth streams when on a cellular network versus higher quality audio for Wi-Fi connections.
At Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference in June, AOL Radio was highlighted during the iPhone Developer Showcase and received the Apple Design Award for “Best Entertainment Application.”
* Truveo Mobile Video Search for iPhone maximizes the device’s premium video experience and makes it easy for users to search and browse through millions of online videos while on the go. Truveo’s leading video search engine provides direct links to video content that’s been optimized for the iPhone from a wide variety of video sources including CNN, Discovery Channel, HBO, NBC, PBS, Channel, Comedy Central, MTV and YouTube. Localized versions of Truveo Mobile Video Search for iPhone will be available for the U.S., Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK, with support for additional countries to follow in the coming months.
All three applications are available for free from Apple’s App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/
More information on AIM, AOL Radio and Truveo Mobile Video Search for iPhone can be found at http://mobile.aol.com/iphone .
In addition to the AIM, AOL Radio and Truveo applications for the iPhone, AOL has also optimized many of its popular websites and services for the iPhone’s Safari browser including; AOL.com, AOL Mail, AOL Mobile Search, AOL Money & Finance, Moviefone, AOL Food, AOL Horoscopes, AOL TV Listings and AOL Shopping.
"Apple finally let developers know when their iPhone apps will be live on the App Store for users to download and use: around 9 am PST Thursday morning. That, at least, is when the embargo lifts and press can start writing about the specific applications. Presumably the App Store will go live, along with iPhone 2.0 software in general, around that time."
