Cydia opens App Store for Jailbroken iPhones and iPod touch

It was believed that after Apple opened up the App Store to allow 3rd party applications to run on the iPhone and iPod touch the jailbreaking community was going to go away. The problem was that Apple had complete control over the applications that made it into the App Store, but more importantly what apps didn't. Apple has rejected many apps that compete with any of Apple's own iPhone OS apps. Developers began to receive rejection letters like the one below.

"Your application duplicates the functionality of the built-in iPhone application Mail without providing sufficient differentiation or added functionality, which will lead to user confusion."

The jailbreaking community has actually grown since Apple began allowing 3rd party applications to run on the iPhone OS. Cydia , the installer app that runs on jailbroken iPhones and iPod touch has announced that beginning today Cydia is opening its own App Store where developers will be able to sell and distribute their applications.

This news will definitely anger Apple, but hopefully it'll show them that developers and customers want to be able to create and purchase applications that add functionality not allowed or available due to Apple's choosing.

Copy/Paste is reason enough to jailbreak ;)
