  Is the Palm OS dead?
I've read all the stories today about ACCESS' announcement:
"that a logical end-of-life is expected for the Palm operating system (OS) and that the company anticipates being able to offer an integrated OS solution "sitting on top of a Linux kernel".
Notice that they are anticipating offering an integrated OS solution sitting on top of a Linux kernel. I don't see the Palm OS dying any time soon, it's used by far too many users to die. What I see in this announcement is the shift to a Palm GUI running on top of Linux. The Palm OS is just too familiar and inutitive that ACCESS would buy PalmSource only to kill off the Palm OS. We all know last year PalmSource announced that all their developing would be focused on Palm OS for Linux. Could the intergrated OS solution be Palm OS for Linux? Maybe ACCESS wants to drop the Palm name from the OS they own. We know that Palm paid 30 million dollars to get all rights to the Palm name, and that PalmSource would have to drop "Palm" in the future. Am I thinking rational, Or am I in denial? Leave me some comments, I enjoy reading what you think.

Comments:
The Purchase Agreement dated May 23, 2005 where Palm bought the Palm name from PalmSource (now being acquired by Access), contains requirements for PalmSource to change its corporate identity and product branding by a specific date. Until the Linux kernel is released by PalmSource/Access, a different name for PalmOS will have to be used. It will still literally be Garnet, and the unannounced name will add another layer of confusion because Palm is required in this Agreement to use the new OS name with their spring 2006 products and to provide marketing assistance to clarify the confusion.
